    Easy P5b Deluxe Mods

    Hey there,
Today I spent some time and changed my SB and NB cooling. Here are some shots...

    1) very very nasty TIM under SB and NB:

    http://weboperative.com/OCIDB/index....&Qis=M&Qtmp=FS

    2) needed a heat gun to take off TIM on SB and alcohol, lots of:
    http://weboperative.com/OCIDB/index....&Qis=M&Qtmp=FS

    3) Finally they are cleaner:
    http://weboperative.com/OCIDB/index....&Qis=M&Qtmp=FS
    http://weboperative.com/OCIDB/index....&Qis=M&Qtmp=FS

    4) A shot of stock cooling system (after cleaning the TIM on the SB heatsink) - have no idea why they put gray band for passive ram cooling
    http://weboperative.com/OCIDB/index....&Qis=M&Qtmp=FS

    5) using good old as5 and a spatula:
    http://weboperative.com/OCIDB/index....&Qis=M&Qtmp=FS
    http://weboperative.com/OCIDB/index....&Qis=M&Qtmp=FS
    http://weboperative.com/OCIDB/index....&Qis=M&Qtmp=FS

    6) Scythe Kaze 40mm fan on top of SB heatsink using Loctite:
    http://weboperative.com/OCIDB/index....&Qis=M&Qtmp=FS

    7) Using evercool VC-RE for NB cooling - was a tight fit but I think it is OK:
    http://weboperative.com/OCIDB/index....&Qis=M&Qtmp=FS
    http://weboperative.com/OCIDB/index....&Qis=M&Qtmp=FS
    http://weboperative.com/OCIDB/index....&Qis=M&Qtmp=FS
    http://weboperative.com/OCIDB/index....&Qis=M&Qtmp=FS
    http://weboperative.com/OCIDB/index....&Qis=M&Qtmp=FS
    http://weboperative.com/OCIDB/index....&Qis=M&Qtmp=FS
    http://weboperative.com/OCIDB/index....&Qis=M&Qtmp=FS

    8) Using a saw and metal cutter scissor - not looking so good but hey it worked:
    http://weboperative.com/OCIDB/index....&Qis=M&Qtmp=FS
    http://weboperative.com/OCIDB/index....&Qis=M&Qtmp=FS
    http://weboperative.com/OCIDB/index....&Qis=M&Qtmp=FS

    9) It's done
    http://weboperative.com/OCIDB/index....&Qis=M&Qtmp=FS
    http://weboperative.com/OCIDB/index....&Qis=M&Qtmp=FS
    http://weboperative.com/OCIDB/index....&Qis=M&Qtmp=FS

    Hope it helps...

EDIT: i think i need to mention that (in case) after above mods no more RMA possibility exists...

Hate to crap on your parade however, the stock north bridge cooler seems better than what your now using. Why did you but that NB cooler, and not just install a 40mm fan on the stock NB cooler? In case you didnt know, there is a tin metal cover that the factory puts over the heatsink for some reason, but once you peel that off, you can screw in a fan.
    Nothing anymore

^^ may I ask why stock NB cooler seems better to you - don't mean to offend, just curiousity - did I miss anything?? I always thought active cooling works better, in addition I don't think the pipe that I cut was copper.

I used vc-re in several dfi's (socket 939) and they worked great compared to stock chipset cooling. Hopefully, after I fire my rig, NB won't get too hot (it, indeed, was getting so hot under load with stock cooling but didn't try to put a fan on top of it (even tough I tought about it))

    thanks...

So there's no "quick-evaporation" chemical on that "heatpipe"?

I did this a while ago to mine, but I just put back the stock cooling. Your pics look just about as mine did when I took it apart. I just cleaned everything up (yes, that stuff it a pain to get off) and used as5. I don't know how to monitor the temps, I have a laser temp gun that I use. Before cleaning, temps were about 60c, now they are below 40c. Thats running 100% load both cores 24/7.

    Ouch, bye bye warranty >.<

Instead of hacking the heatpipe NB cooler up, I suggest finding a new way to cool your PWMs.

It's not that hard to do, some slot heatsinks, maybe dremel it to the appropriate size, a drill, a thread taper (if you dont have it, you can even drill holes into the heatsink and ziptie it to the mobo, that works too)

    Great post, thanx ooztuncer.

I just removed the Northbridge heatsink+heatpipe from my P5B Dlx WiFi myself. I was about to begin doing a similar mod, although I am using Thermaltake Extreme Spirit II for NB and just came here to see if any posts on this topic before I begin.

The one thing I am unsure about is what to do with this stock heatsink that goes back on Mobo:

    http://weboperative.com/OCIDB/index....&Qis=M&Qtmp=FS

Did you apply Arctic Silver 5 to the entire bottom of this heatsink where the stock thermal putty stuff is?
Or did you leave it stock?

    Thanx.

Ill be making my mods later tonight/tommorow probably, I'm also looking to reduce heat on NB.

I didn't put anything under that big heatsink. Actually, I even peeled off the gray sticky substance (didn't believe that it is doing anything - but it's just me). Right now, it is sitting on top of the chips but I can't see whether my contact is good or not.... Godd luck to you.

That heat pipe only transfers heat really well, but the passive heatsinks are still weak. I'd replace the sinks but not cutting the heatpipe lol, it's fun to play with =P
