    Distributed Computing and you

What would entice you guys to join up and get our teams kicking even more butt than we are already?

We've kicked around ideas from mass emailings to give-aways and even custom user titles or making DC points reflect as a second "post count" which allows access to a Lounge area where there could be special deals advertised and a generally fun place but nothing seems quite right.

So its up to you guys who might want to join any of the miscelaneous Folding@Home, World Community Grid, Rosetta@Home, or even Seti@Home teams.

We need your help to dominate the standings and we want to know what we can do to appeal to you!

All along the watchtower the watchmen watch the eternal return.

I may hop on WCG again, but my power bill as of late has been high and im trying to cut costs whereever I can. Comp only comes on when I need it really. Otherwise I would be all over it again. =/

I've been looking into buying a router/hardrive/bittorent client for god's sake, I hate leaving my computer on that long...

So..... your machine can sleep while you sleep. You don't NEED to be 24/7 on!
Same hours as you are on will do just fine pal....!

    agreed

But I learned to sleep with 7 PCs roaring away (don't have cash to make them all quiet!), it takes a little getting used to but it is possible

Why, was he against them before?

Serialk11r, most of these systems are built out of spare parts, with very little money put into them. The fans are all old spare 80mm or 92mm fans pulled from old PSUs and such. Most of them are housed in cardboard boxes. I don't have money to sink into this stuff, and to get enough yates for these systems would cost me upwards of $50 + to replace all the fans assuming about $5 per fan.

I just stuck the computer boxes in the closet to help dampen the noise and it works well. The doors to the closet are open for airflow.

He says that they are "loud", which I personally can't understand. I can't hear them next to my Panaflo M1A and Delta 141cfm fans @ 7v.

I was never against them I have learned the unfortunate truth: there is no quiet fan... actually there might be, but I don't want to spend a ton more money now on fans, after I just got all these yate loons.

Look in the wcg section. Also many other projects in the DC vault.
    Enough to satisfy any taste.

Reading through this thread this came to mind:
    Fan noise:
Since I tend to fall asleep on the sofa ,5 ft from my head are 5-80's,4-92's,4-120's and a 250mm fan.
    What noise?
Now as to "built from spare parts:
Yes, a lot of them are but not all. We have guys running state of the art systems 24/7 on Dc projects.
Compared to the other guys on the team, I'm maybe in the middle.
2 Dual xeon machines and 2 dual clovertown machines.
We have guys that have 20+ machines running at their homes, IT guys with 50-100 machines running and a member with almost 160 machines running for the cause..
We also have guys with an old P3 or socket A Athlon running.
All are welcome, no discrimination and no one looking down their nose at what you have and thats no BS...

I just run it for the heck of running this stuff, I don't have too much faith in the cancer and aids part...its just sorta fun, and it makes me feel less guilty about leaving the computer on.

You think I don't understand a s*** about medicine? hehehe don't jump to conclusions before you know more about me...
72k points? only? I guess I've been working my allendale too hard these days. For now, all I care about is that you are one of those people trailing 6k behind me Don't worry next week I'll hopefully get a new board, then this little thing will use its 3.2ghz leg to kick your butt.
