    E6600 + 965-S3 slowdown!!!!?!

    This is weird.....

I have changed everything back to stock default, but it seems that my system is basically running at half speed.

SPI is gone to 45 seconds or something, Memory bandwith has halfed. Basically all the results put me at the same level as a 3.0Ghz P4 !!!

This is on a Gigabyte S3
    E6600 @ Stock 2.4Ghz Vcore stock
Idle temps 30-35 (from Core Temp)
    Ram- Team Xtreem (512x2) 4-5-5-18 Default Timings @ 400 2:3 divider.
The gfx is a PCI elcheapo ATI from years ago.

Its fair to say that I only noticed after installing Power DVD, but I can't seem to put my finger on what caused the change. There had been many reboots when i was pushing the system earlier in the day.... but to run at basically half speed is weird.

So I suppose I will ask.... "Any ideas, cos I'm damn well confused?"

Everything looks as you would expect in BIOS? Volts correct? CPU speed correct?

    Bios set conservative/incorrect ram timings?
Some sort of power saving kicking in?

The following ss was taken of a ds3 at default 266fsb and Team @ 400 2:3 divider. This is what I think you'll get if you choose defaut settings. Look at the CPU-Z SPD tab. I'd bet one of the settings will be a frequency of 400. That's what your system used for it's default setting.

If there's something else you mean by 'half speed' you'll need to further explain.

Power DVD has the Mobility Power saving features enabled by default.
be sure to go into powerdvd configuration and turn them off.!!
these could be causing the system to drop the cpu multi way down.

also you may need to install the MS dual core hotfix for intel cpu's.
powerDVD could have jacked with something.
but check the programs mobility power saving features first.

that's my guess. Get throttlewatch to monitor the throttling. Also, if you noticed it happen when you installed something, maybe try a format? might solve some problems.

and my P4 630 is still a good processor , lol

    Right -

Downloaded Dual core patch and carried out the registry edit.. no effect.

Performed system restore - no effect

Booted with 2nd IDE hardrive (spare with base install XP) no effect, so this rules out any active software issue.

Would I not notice throlling effects on Freq if i keep CPUZ open??

Lestat - i will reload up powerDVD version 5 (gone after system restore) and i will look for that option you mentioned. It MAY have tampered with a bios setting that basically does not show up in Bios. Just might happen.

Larry - I will clear CMOS after the previous and see what happens.

Stealthy that Pent D in your sig is also a good piece of kit! At those speeds at least. I will DL throttelwatch and see what that tells me.

Thanks everybody. Updates i will bring.

Just to add also, I had swapped PCI cards (wireless and a TV tuner) then i swapped them back as they would require a reinstall of drivers for use.... I hardly think this is a IRQ resource issue after swapping the PCI cards around? Anyways... i will battle on.

Just to reiterate.... Back to F8i BIOS, RAM at Default speed timings, all voltages at default, PROC speed at default, ALL EIST etc etc disabled....
proc is watercooled with ZALMAN reserator with a 'custom' bracket. Northbridge stock heatsink cooled with a 80mm fan ran off the CPU fan header.

OK so throlttling program showed up nothing really... the options for graphing volts was greyed out. Just CPU Clock speed was the only one working.

But... i used perfmonitor from CPUZ's website. Now that is an interesting app.

Heres my finding... when TM is turned on, the multi is locked to 6x. When changed to 9x in Bios it resets back to 6 anyways. Now i get decent perf out of this... and perf monitor shows correct clock speed (cycles been used under load) and correct 'bus speed'. A good solid 266Mhz and 1600Ghz usage.

    Now heres the killer.............

When TM is diabled in Bios i can NOW set the multi to x9 and it sticks there

Bad new is... something very very strange happens when i look at Perfmonitor. The 'non halted clock' jumps around the place, and the 'bus speed' jumps also. So set to stock 266 FSB, in poerf monitor under full dual core load the bus jumps around from 150-180.... and clock cycle are not used at a steady rate at all. And last time I checked the PC I had probelems rebooting it now. New problem. If she stops booting now.... methings RMA. I'll try one more s3 before migrating to another brand. Perhaps i'll be lucky to get a C2 rev this time.

Any chance that i might have broken something? maybe overvolted the FSB too much for too long??

Larry - Cleared CMOS... no effect... well beside the fact i had change things back to default

Lestat - PowerDVD Version 5 does not have those power saving features as far as I can tell. I'm sure later versions do !

    So a screenie.....

This is taken with TM disabled in Bios. CPUZ would tell me (agrees with Easytune) that I have set the FSB at 266 and multi at 9. However, Perfmonitor (which uses same driver as CPUZ methinks) shows that only ~150 FSB and ~1.4Ghz of CPU speed are used actively, ie none halted clock cycles. Those 2 SB clients basically are maxing out both cores for me.

Now... if I have TM enabled.... Perfmonitor would show a smooth 266 Bus and 1600 (x6 multi, never goes to x9 multi for me with TM enabled) as you may expect, when at 100% usage.

So you get the idea now.... seems that its barely using the system at all, and I can tell you that the cEM/sec in the SB client should be WAAAY higher on a normal 6600.
