[Denny]680i vs 975 mobo, which one is better choice?

    CPU: INTEL X6800 @ 3.6G 1.7v
    975 MOBO: ASUS P5WDG2 WS PRO FSB400
    680I MOBO: ASUS 680I ROG-S FSB400
    975 RAM: GSKILL DDR2 1000 2GBHZ @ 1000 4-4-3-5
    680I RAM: GSKILL DDR2 1000 2GBHZ @ 1200 4-3-3-5
    VIDEO CARD: XFX 8800GTX @ 700 / 1050
    COOLING: AIR, TQ120
PSU: PC POWER AND COOLING 1000W

    975 32M

    680i 32M

    975 CINBENCH

    680i CINBENCH

    975 3DMARK06

    680i 3DMARK06

If 975 chipset has more ram divider, such as working 1066 divider.... it is very easy to out perforamce 680i. Just FSB450 and DDR2 1130.... damn that is killer 975....but how many 975 can do that XD!!!
If i have time tomorrow i will try like 3.7G, 3.8G. since for those two CPU speed i can do FSB 411 and 422 and DDR2 103x and 105x...hopefully with higher FSB and ram speed, it can easy over 680i.

    Interesting,

I got a Bad Axe 2 incoming myself (when ZZF gets around to sending it) and I am gunning for 3.8GHz Orthos blend stable on air with a Tuniq 120 for at least 8hours. We'll see.

Getting over DDR 1100 would be nice. I know my ram is capable of 1150.

    ever try 975 1:1 400mhz 3-3-3? might be interesting.

Usually the mobo chipset comparisons have the memory timings and speed exactly the same. I'll assume the point here is that the same memory sticks perform at higher speeds and tighter timings on the 680i, but it only gives the 680i the ability keep up with the 975x in these benches. Even in the memory intensive Pi 32M 680i doesn't really gain much of a lead. Still with the average stable FSB on 680i being higher than 975x, its likely that not only will 680i users be able to drive their memory speeds higher but their CPUs as well. All of this within weeks of the birth of the mobos. Hard to argue that 680i looks like the clear winner in the long run for people who frequent XS. For those who don't like to tweak and use single Nvidia video cards, 975 and 965 might be a better solution at default settings.

I had better score with my 965 compared to my 680i.

The DQ6 is a damn fast mobo and should match lots of 975x chipset or even sometimes beat them

that is exactly right, thinking 680i is around 230~250 for P5N32-E and same as P5WDH or ROG vs WS PRO.
however, with same ram, 680i both speed and timing are better then 975. also 680i divider gives more options than 975

    ex: FSB400 for 975 = 1000 1067(can't use) 1200.....
    FSB400 for 680i = 1000,101x, 103x, 1066, 108x, 1100, 113x, 115x, 117x, 1200

damn we can find the best overclocking for ram on 680i easy!

i do think when 975 @ over FSB400~440 will be much faster then 680i
that i am going to test tonight.

also.... think about 6x0i chipset later on... without SLi ..... maybe like $180~160.... if that is right.... 975 / 965 = hard to sell XD

Nice write-up denny, this is the sort of comparison I've been looking forward to. Most of the other mini-reviews I've seen have been comparing 1t vs 2t etc and while 1t is nice and certainly quick you just can't get the memory to clock high enough when running 1t to be that useful.

I'm looking forward to your high FSB tests, are you going to be running 1:1 tests as well as the ratios?

OK here is 3.7G by pulling FSB
when 975 pulling FSB, memory speed is pulling too
    but 680i is not

    3.7G 32M

    3.7G CINBENCH

    3.7G 3DMARK06

once FSB for 975 reaches 411 & memory to 103x, score difference becomes small
very interesting to see what is FSB423 between 680i and 975, that is sth 965 can't compare (after FSB400, 965 performance decreases)

how much is vNB voltage on 975x. Over 410 fsb I could never get 4:5 ratio to work.

    nice...

i'd really like to see 1:1 3-3-3 on 975 and same on 680i only 1t at 411FSB if you can find the time.

    any 3-3-3 1:1 on 975?
and 680i 1T on what FSB? ram speed?

    1t at 411.. or 1:1 ratio...

but i suppose you can use any ram speed you want. You don't have to do the testing for me, i was just curious to see how the two performed at equal clocks with uber tight timings, as 975 is best at tight timings in 1:1 with high fsb.

denny this is how i see it

do MAX OCs on current cooling on both 680i and 975x....whatever the max CPU MHz they can pull and max RAM MHz and latency and THEN let's see who takes it out...........

that's is also as important as 1:1 comparisons
