WARNING: Splinter Cell Double Agent and 8800

    Hey all,

I nearly went out and swapped some perfectly good money for Double Agent on release day like alot of people did. Now i'm glad i didn't because after downloading the demo it appears this game has some serious issues, especially with 8800. Hopefully a new driver will fix the graphical corruption I and many other have been getting, but it seems this game does not even run (as in start up) on many peoples systems, with or without 8800. Here are some quotes i found surfing forums trying to find a fix for my problem...

"I'm browsing the SCDA forums at ubi.com and it good to know im not alone. People are have kinds of problems and complaints. Some people even found Xbox files and some files titled blahblah.ini (which suggests an unfinished product)."

"Same issue here lol. First error i got was *MUST CHECK*, whatever that means...the game didn't even try to start. "

One poor guy i came across had to have a web page open for his game to start, but i guess at least he got his running. In my game the entire screen is oversaturated and overexposed, Sam Fisher looks like a big, spidery, sprawling mess of stretched polys and it is generally impossible to tell where the hell you are, or what the hell is going on. A patch has been released for it but i'm not sure to what extent this addresses issues, it doesn't mention any horrific bug fixes in the release notes, but I will have a look around to see. But fans of the SC series, definately have a look around before you put down cash for this game.

Same as Cadaveca... No problems at all... Well, had the "Cyclic Redundancy check" error while installing, but cleared it up by cleaning the cd

Goddamn bugs... Got the graphical errors today, as well as only partial sound in the Shanghai level... Solved them by re-installing DX9c from the Splinter Cell DVD, as well as my drivers... So now I'm going to try to finish the game

Should say:WARNING: Splinter Cell Double Agent Bug Filled fest
I alone have found over 10 bugs. I normally don't find these things or actively look for them. They have however found me. I am currently stuck because the damn game keeps crashing with a engine.dll error. Guess what it is the last mission of the game too. I want to go back and fight strictly for the JBA but not if I have to put up with all the damn flaws. Ubisoft is worse than EA, you want to talk about unfinished work. At least I was able to complete NFS: Carbon, this game I guess I'm stuck until patch 1.02 or 1.1 comes out.

As much as i want to give an "lol" to that, i can't. It's such a shame that they release what alot of people agree is a complete turkey of a game after a great game like Chaos Theory. But it's weird, people seem to be divided over Double Agent. I've heard people say they love it, and that it's one of the best games they've ever played, and from others that it's completely unplayable and that they have destroyed the franchise. I would like to see for myself, but there's no way i'm putting down good money until they fix this game a little.

Funny thing is, until I formatted my harddrive the other day (had been playing around too much with various skins for XP ), I had no problems at all, got all the way to the cruiser level without a single bug, nor crash... After the format I have to save every 5 mins to make sure I don't have to start all over when the game suddenly hangs (which hasn't happened too often up 'till now, fortunately)... It seems to be very hit and miss with the bugs in this game...

Not here, I found several and the crash that's keeping me from completing the game is a PITA. I decided to wait for the next patch and see what happens. In the meantime I'm replaying Oblivion but cheating like crazy. The 1st time I beat the game it was legit, so no bad looks.

That crash is actually related to the 1.01 patch (launch-day-patches )... Un install it, and you can finish the game... Hell of a job, but if you want to see the finish, for now you'll have to do that ...
I've started playing GRAW again, waiting for the next patch as well... GRAW is at least playable without bugs after the latest patches

None of the bugs and errors which you might encounter in SCDA are hardware related, as long as you're running a DX9c cabable GFX... It's all in the horrendous coding, done by Ubisoft Shanghai (why couldn't they just leave it to Montreal?? WHY Shanghai, they should stop making Splinter Cell games... )

Hey Tomcat, welcome to XS forums! How weird though, you have a postcount of "0" lol. N/M.

But not a clue m8, sorry. Is this just since you got that 8800?

(Btw S.W.A.T 4 rocks! I lent that game to someone and never saw it again, shame really).

Yep before I played it on my laptop, no problem, and now with my kickass system.... nothing ....
The strange thing is I was able to play swat on my new rig before until I got it overclocked, used the newest forceware drivers and new bios. The only thing I haven't tried yet is to downgrade the bios again.

If other suggestions... givme givme givme

Had the same with CT. Using a custom XP CD that's updated till 30 nov, and one of the updated (99142 iirc) was causing CT and DA to not load at all. Only way to fix it for me atleast was to reformat and use a non-custom XP, but meh. It's time for ubisoft to go fix there games, and drop Starforce -.-
