Well, while xtreme air + high-end TEC might not work, it could be possible that a low-end TEC's combo might result in better CPU temps. Remember that Italian dude with his extreme TEC chiller![]()
Water cooled TEC's actually work pretty well... so I figure maybe frigid air > 25C water??

I agree Charlie, I think a TEC will work quite well with very cold air and these new large area heatsinks. In the old days the heat capacity of the heatsinks was not enough for the cpu + tec and also heat used to soak back through, however I did some testing with a BT a while ago in ambients of about 7C and it did manage to hold the Peltier on it's own at about -10C. However no Cpu was involved in that test so I think the ambients would have to be a lot lower, say -10C and lots of cfm applied.Originally Posted by charlie

The liquid in them is a type of oil isn't it ? If that is the case then oil should not freeze at all. maybe it gets very sluggish but if that is the case then the cpu should heat up and so should the liquid so acting as feedback. Puzzling![]()
I'm hoping to get to find out myself but it rarely gets as cold as -10C in the SE of England. Damn the Gulf Stream!

From what I've red before, it was more like that there was a gas inside working on the principle of phase change cooling. Heat-up at the base -> evaporate -> coold down due to the cooled heatsink -> forced flow back to the base. This mini phase change thingy is designed for 20°C ambient temperatures (a bit more or less, you know what I mean). Still I don't know why it doesn't function anymore at low temps. When the heatpipe fails the base will get hot. Since the heatpipe is vastend to the base it should follow to heat up. At a certain point you will see that there is no temp gain, although ambient temp might be 10°C lower. Maybe the heat pipe's mixture was frozen and it needs some time to work properly again.
Considering the air cooled TEC, what was the TEC's Qmax?

I have tested shortly my CPU with standard AIR (room temps where 21 degrees) and I was able to get around 4152-4164 MHZ with a time of 12.208 sec (don't know it exactly anymore).
Tommorow I will try to get as high as I can with Orthos and on standard AIR.

In the meantime I have a Superpi score which is better (11,844 sec.). I have a picture of it, but it is not complete, only the superpi score is in it. After that I wanted to make a picture with CPU-Z and CLockgen etc and the system rebooted. But I will manage this week hopefully to get another go for a faster time than 11,891 sec.
The home made cooler is not finnished yet, so I have to try it with the Termal Take Big Typhoon
