First Nvidia 650i Board. Asus P5N-E SLI.

If the ridiculous prices of the Asus 680i boards is just too damn much to swallow, theres a saving grace in all this commotion with the 650i series of boards.

they are basically the little brother of the 680's.

features SLI still, but at 8 x 8, not 16 x 16.
seems to lack the big features of the 680i boards, and has the usual clutterd caps around the socket, which the 680's are nice and clean around the socket, so its something to think about, if your going to phase change.
otherwise, no big deal....
no heatpipes, and built in sound...
does not having the on/off switchs, or the clear cmos button like the striker does, but then again, neither does the P5N32-E SLI.

so it's definatly looking like a board with a lower price tag.
should be a good board, especially if you want something more affordable then the $300+ boards.

I would assume this board should hit the shelves rather quick....
wasnt even 2 days, from the time I heard of the P5N32-E SLI that it was at ZZF and Newegg, so hopefully the 650's show up soon too.

Looks good to me. The P5W also has 2 8x PCIE, so it shouldnt be worse than that.

Does the first slot run in 16X if the second slot aint being used?

At least the P5N-E IDE connector isn't crammed between the memory slots and the pwr connector.

I'm impatient but I've decided to wait awhile and hope for some clues as what to get and what to avoid.

Note: These cards require PCI-E x16 slots, they will not function in a x8 slot so for SLi you need dual x16 mainboard.

Also Anandtech reported in 680i SLI review that 650/650 SLI boards will be available in December with pretty affordable prices. So not long to wait

what i find kinda odd is that it is using a daughter card for SLi mode switching. i thought we were past that phase in SLi where instead it would be done through the bios.

also, the SB isn't sinked, wonder if it gets hot?

Only 2x8 SLi, on a brand new chipset?? I know they have to make it less desirable for people to not take this instead of the bigger brother, but that seems kinda cheap... We should be at full x16 SLi functionality on all new boards... Perhaps they'll make it a standard by the time PCI-E 2.0 rolls in...
It seems a bit cramed, or am I the only one thinking that??
But if it performs good, especially at oc, it's a good board regardless

I have trouble understanding why the board manufacturers are doing away with standard pci and replacing them with pcie 1x before card manufacturers are making the pci 1x cards.

Take a look at the P5N-E SLI's older sibling and you'll see the same red card. The manual for the P5NSLI calls it the ASUS EZ selector card connector that allows you to set the SLI mode to either Single Video card or Dual Video cards.

That card was being used on the first SLi chipsets to enable or disable SLI mode.
Looks very like its the same on this board.
Its like a huge jumper to enable or disable SLi.

quite a retarded idea, to allow the 8800's to only work on 16x boards, that means you cant even run 8800gts sli on this thing.

Don`t think that somebody who can spend that much money on two 8800GTS and big monitor will go for "cheap" motherboard

tech move so fast that even a 8800gts will be outdated in some 3 weeks time by something 2 times faster

and will end up costing much less than they do now.

jokes aside, nvidia will probably come up with a 8600gt that works on 8x or something like that.

True. But schedule will be somewhere after R600. $600-$700 for top card doesn`t look that horrible today, does it ?

Anyone knows how much bandwidth 8800GTS/GTS requires ?
Pci-e 8x max is 2GBps which is 100MBps less than AGP 8x

to keep the noobs out of bios.

You still need to enable 8x+8x mode in BIOS

I'm trying to hold out hope for the 650i Ultra. Overclocking isn't just for people with bottomless checking accounts, and SLI is not a technology associated with value.
The new GPU's are dual-core anyhow
