MSI 7900GTO Vmem mod

Now this is a good GTO card

Modded using vr on booth Vmem and Vgpu.



But the same problem as everybody else. I just get artifacts when going over 1,95V

Nice clocks, but how are your temps ? I am interested in the GPU and mem temp.

Gpu is cooled using pot and dry ice. Temp is about -50C on GPU.

I touched one of the memchips with my finger when running 3dmark06, and its coold. So i guess its ok

for all the people that say their card overheats (thinking this is like most other vid cards) and cant overclock that high, ur wrong
u run into voltage problems waaay before u run into temp problems
just wanted to make something clear to some guys that say their card always overheats

don't complain about USA can't get MSI ones. We can get it in the UK but they are 30% more expensive like any computer component here in Europe. I wish we have pc parts as cheap as USA!!!! I am after an opteron 170 in the UK and they cost over 400 dollars here

BTW my MSI cost me about $306 (£170) + delivery, you can get evga in the USA for about $250

You are absolutely right.

I can confirm now that there is no VID vgpu mod for this card. So if you want to mod it, use variable resistor.

I would like to know, how much more mhz you guys get after vmem mod.

Example (not my card ):
Stock V / 820MHz
1.95V / 850MHz
2.05V / 880MHz

Tested this Vmem mod myself:

Default voltage 1.82V / 1760MHz
1.91V / 1880MHz
1.98V / 1940MHz

Most likely die from overvoltage, if not cooled properly, and the stock cooler doesn't cool the RAM as it should.
Default voltage for those BJ11 chips is 1.90V, max. is 2.00V according to Samsung's specs.

GTX default voltage is 2.15V. There is only little chance, that these chips could not handle it.

Old GTX with Samsung BJ11 had some problems with ram chips causing artifacts after some time, now the GTX uses Infineon 1.2ns RAM for this reason.
The Samsung BJ11 is supposed to be good for 900MHz(1800MHz DDR) with 2.00V, I looked up the sepcs. It used to be 1.90V default(1.80V min and 2.00V max), or I must have looked at something different, dunno.

Confusing thread indeed. So i recon there is a pencil vmem mod that works? My mem goes up to 880 stock V and cooler artifact free, would be fun to see how high it would go with 1.9-2.0V.

Yes it is. Value of that resistor is only 25 ohm. 1ohm lower= 0,1V up.

On first post you say that the "blue" method can couse problem's with over 1.95v, is it the same thing for the pencil mod ??

I have just seen few user reports. Few members here have done it that way and results are not as good as this "red" method gives.

Of course overvolting and overclocking are almost pure luck. Extra 0.1V gives different results with every gpu or memory.

For example, I can do 2GHz (mem) with 2.08V. (results are worse than 2.0V and 1960MHz, so no bench results). Someone else could not do over 1800MHz even with 2.2V.

Just bought this card and will be doing both vgpu and vmem mods via the soldering method.

The card I bought does 725/810 stock so it should clock well. Now my questions is which is the better cooler for handling both mods; stock or a Zalman VF900 with OCZ copper ramsinks?

Really? I would think that the Zalman could outperform it because it isolates the heat from the ramsinks and the core. Perhaps not though.

Also, may I ask why everyone is being so conservative on the voltages? I have a 7900GT doing 715/1920 on air at 1.55/2.16v which is considered safe. Temps are great. Why is everyone sticking near stock vgpu and around 2.0 for the memory?
