    X1900XT Overclocking Problemes.

    Hey Guys,

I have been looking for a Good guide on how exacly (steps by steps) to Oc my Saphire X1900XT Safely. Then i found this Guide: http://www.madshrimps.be/?action=gethowto&howtoID=61

Pretty good Guide IMO. It helped me a lot. I managed to get my Card to 711.00 on the core and 800.00 on the RAM. Played Cod 2 for an hours and ran ATItool's Cube test for an hour also. Now i know it may be not the highest clocks but it's on stcok voltage for now lol!

Anyways heres the probs. I used ATItool to Oc my card (just liek they recommended in the Guide) so it requires me to disbale the ati2evxx.exe in process manager. (ati2evxx.exe is the process that lower you volatage and core's/mem's clock when not into a 3D Application, in other words 2D/3D modes) So the Card runs at the 3D mode all the time... so it's better when Overclocking.

Instead of ending the procees each and eveytime windows starts up, ive done this : "disable it entirely from inside the Windows Services management (Start > Run > services.msc)." I disabled it from there and then it dont even starts up when windows boots up.

So the prob is that when i load my Overclocked profile on ATItool and then go play F.E.A.R it automaticly slow down the core and mem back to their stock settings...(2D clocks) in other words it set back the Default profile (which has the stock settings) but thats only whit F.E.A.R ... In Cod 2, i load my Overclocking profile, Start the Game and when i get out of the game the clocks are still alright and it does not set the Default profile back...

    Any Ideas ?

Also, when i load my Oced Profile (710/1600) Then try to watch movie on Windows media player, the Video does not start instead i get some white lines all over the screen and a systeme reboot... Tryed lowering the Core and mem and it works, only prob is as soon as the movie starts it set back to clock to 500/1200 2D clocks ...

Also what is that VPU recover thing ? I got a message while testing\benching\Ocing last day...

So basicly, how do you Guys Overclock whit thoses Damn Cards ? what programs and what steps ? thoses 2D/3D Modes are killing me

    Thanks!

Any1 ? Basicly what i want is just to know how to Oc the 3D Clocks of my card, so that when not into a 3D App is use the 2D clocks and when Gaming (running a 3D App) it uses the overclocked Settings. And what programs to use to do that. THANKS!

I've noticed the exactly same thing, some games worked with ATi tool clocks, and some didn't. Company Of heroes reverts my clock back to 2d.

I believe you both are coming across a known issue with ATITool beta 14. Beta 14 requires you to disable the ATI polling service that switches between 2 clock modes. Apparently there are 3 clock modes and the 3rd mode is for video and its controlled by the ATI drivers themselves and not the polling program. Really hoses the situation.

If you will notice, the clocks you think you are getting set are actually LOWER than the 2D mode. It is happening to me in Company of Heroes, I am just not sure when and whether my performance in game was even affected becuase it seems to run really well. I can't imagine it running this well if the clocks were switched while I was playing, it seems to just be happening on exit.

The solution right now is to see if Beta 16 works for you and not disable the polling service. Wizzard itook a different approach to overclocking X1K cards in beta 15 and 16. 16 seems to be working out for some. I am going to try 16 myself.

Try ATi Tray Tools and see if this situation still occurs.

    i'm using ATi Tool 0.25 beta 14. clocks 715/801. X1900XT 256

first you must disable ati services that startup at boot.
to do so, start > run > msconfig > services tab
check box that says: 'hide all windows services'
then uncheck: ati hotkey poller and ati smart, hit ok, then reboot.

i set ati tool to boot with windows and set profile to 'stock' for me which is 2D clocks and volts. i have issues with the 'default' profile so i just made my own. i also set mine to 3D detect when i launch a game and load the 3D profile, 625/720, and when i exit a game it goes back to my 'stock' profile.

to test if the 3D detection works, have ati tool open on the desktop and launch a game, the screen will flicker indicating that ati tool has loaded the 3D profile. now just alt+tab out and you should see your clocks for 3D are loaded in ati tool.

now you can test your overclocks or set your 3D to your OC profile.

hope this helps anyone having trouble.

    for reference:

    2D volts:
    core: 1.175
    memory: 1.861

    3D volts:
    core: 1.425
    memory: ~2.061

    my volts on 715/801 clocks:
    core: 1.425
    memory: 2.106

I tested it last night and it does happen with ATI Tray Tools too, it is easily duplicated by playing a DVD in PowerDVD. The interesting part is while using ATI Tool, video causes downclocks to 399/499, and ATI Tray Tools the video downclock is just my standard 2D clocks (499/599).

But I do think the 3D detection and autoswitching is working in both ATI Tray Tools and ATI Tool for Company of Heroes, because my performance did not seem to suffer. You can see the history of the switching of the clocks multiple times in CoH if you run the Monitor graphs in ATI Tray Tools while playing the game. I became aware of the problem using ATI Tool after exiting the game, my card would be downclocked lower than my 2D settings in ATI Tool (399/499) which I thought was odd. I went to the official ATI Tool forum and read about the video downclock in the ATI Tool beta 16 thread and that supposedly it is controlled directly by the ATI Drivers and not by the disabled polling program. That is when I duplicated the issue using PowerDVD. Never would have noticed it in ATI Tray Tools since the video downclock was no different than the 2D downclock.

But I have switched to using ATI Tray Tools because the autoswitching that these tools do was crashing 3Dmark 06 on start up. ATI Tray Tool seems to work better using Overdrive 3 since the author is using Catalyst drivers for that overclocking mode. So I can now set my overclock and volts using Overdrive 3 and I don't have to disable the polling service anymore which seems to switch clock modes much better than these tools can by themselves(no crashing 3DMark06). Works great and appararently the lower video clocks may not be the only issue in ATI Tool, because I always had a wierd outline in the menu of Company of Heroes, kinda hard to discribe (thought it was a bug in CoH), but that is now gone using ATI Tray Tools and Overdrive 3. But I cannot completely attribute that particular problem to ATI Tool since I went ahead and upgraded to Cat 6.9 during all of my testing.
