    i think i'm cursed(my XP1800 won't overclock)

ok, today i went to the local computer store and picked up a XP1800 and black Lian Li PC60.

the PC60 is great, although i'm not used to working with such a small case as my last was a full tower.

the XP1800 on the other hand, won't overclock for s***. i've got it at 200MHz x 11 now, but it needs 1.8v for that. i'm not going to be happy until i hit 2.4GHz on air.

should i just return this chip? i've got 15 days. or i guess i could just try burning it in.

here's a pic of the chip, but be careful it's 311k(i'd shrink it down, but this way you can see every minute detail).

the latest stepping seems to be what you want. they all reach 2.4ghz, some even with 1.7v on air

the JIXHB stepping? i guess i'll have to keep looking then.

i've got a 0312 XP1700 that doesn't overclock well either, and the store doesn't have anything but the 1800s now.

i think i just keep getting screwed.

*edit* both the XP1700 and XP1800 are DLT3C chips as well.

felix88, what sort of air cooling do you have now? That 1800+ should oc just as well as the 1700+s do. Maybe you need to upgrade your cooling?

Also, what mobo do you have?

well there are always some suckaz in every batch and week of cpus. if you want to be sure that it ocs well try to get a cpu where the third line starts with a. those are from the center of the wafer and oc better.

i've got an Alpha PAL8045, and my motherboard is a NF7-S V2.0(which, by the way, refuses to run at anything above 204MHz FSB).

saaya, you mean the stepping? maybe i should pick up a XP2100 AIUHB?

also, are there any good steppings on the XP2500 bartons yet? i might return this chip and pick one of those up if there is a good chance i'll hit 2.4Ghz with one of those. otherwise, i'm probably just going to keep trying XP1800s until i get a good one.

My 1800+ needs 1.95v to be stable at 2.5Ghz. Not as good as the 1700+ chips, but still damn good value for money.

there are 1800ahiubs too, but hard to find. 2100 are really cheap nowadays and your chances of finding an ahiub are good.

go to tghe local stores and ask them if you can have a look at their cpus. if they ask why just tell them that the newer ones have the default voltage of 1.5v and you want one of those because they run cooler and you dont have a powerfull hfs to cool it. or that your psu is not so good and it can output 1.5v stable but 1.6 or higher fluctuates a lot.

check the mad section there are several people with 1700s they just bought that oc incredibly. one does 2.4ghz with the default amd hsf and 1.8v i think.

felix88............ what are we going to do with you?!? Where have you been going locally that they let you hand pick a chip? The little shop in Canby? If you still have my email, drop me a line sometime....... I'd like to go shopping too. And also, what does your 0312 1700 get up to?

ok, i've got this chip at 2.3GHz with 1.8v. it's been Prime stable for about 15 hours or so. i might give it a try at 2.4GHz again. hopefully it just needs some burning in.

i haven't been able to find any place that stocks the JIXHB chips, so i'm not so sure if anyone has the AIXHB ones either.

i think the damn chip is mocking me!

i left it running at 2.3GHz with 1.8v for nearly 24 hours. it was 100% prime stable throughout the whole time. i can not get the thing stable at 2.4GHz, and it refuses to boot at anything higher than 1.85v regardless of the speed.

unless i get some drastic changes out of this thing tonight, i'm gonna return it. :grr:

what can you do at 2.4 that you can't do at 2.3?

personally having a chip that does 3ghz in my prommie, then going to my lan rig which i am on now. I notice absolutly no differences from 3ghz to 2.3. granted it benchmarks higher but day to day functions are absolutly the same.

Well, i don't think you'll gain more from burning in. I gained 100mhz from burning-in, but afther that you don't have to expect more from the chip. It is very similar to my 2500+(first it did 2,3 and after burn-in 2,4), only mine does accept 1.85V and above. (currently 10x241@1,9V) There are much better chips out there! So if you have the possibility to change, just do it!
(sorry for the bad english, i think there are quite a lott faults in this text :p)
