P5B Deluxe connector on mobo question!

Below are two pictures of the P5B Deluxe mobo, the circle in red is what I have a question about. When you opened the motherboard box, you'll ofcourse have noticed that these 4 sockets were covered by a little greycap. Also in the manual it said something about only having to connect this extra 4 pins if you had an 8EPS connector or something.





I have about 3 PCI-e power connectors dangling from my PSU, and one is in use for my graphics card, and the other would be used for the uncovered 4 pins just below my red circle. I still have one PCI-e power connector, so should I use it to connect to the connector in the red circle or will this do damage to my board?

So bottom line, E6400 + P5B deluxe, should all 8 pins on moboheader be connected with me using 2 PCI-e connectors????

Are you alright? No, don't plug ANY PCIe power connectors in there! If your PSU doesn't have EPS 12V 8-pin connector, then don't try to find any substitiution for it...

You will be fine with 4-pin only, trust me

Trust me, if Asus can make a saving even by 1 cent on that cap they'll do it ! But they don't, so ... hint...hint....

Then they should be more clear in their manual, just a little bit confusing when you have spare connectors that happen to fit like a glove What's a guy to think. So basically connecting just one PCI-e cable like I did is perfect, or is this wrong as well, does it need to be a special uberl33t kind of cable that only comes with bling bling top-of-the-bill PSU's?

the manual is pretty cut and dry if you ask me...


for an explanation of the two different connection types you can always check with your power supply documentation as well. although sometimes the PSU manuals aren't the best.

what the hell is that 8-pin CPU connector on that OCZ, I found 2 seperate 4-pins that fit in the p5b marked CPU1 and CPU2 but it for sure as hell isn't a full 8-pin. Why is OCZ making them 2 seperate cables and calling it 8-pin? On below picture it looks like the CPU connectors are one full connector, but its basically two loose ones.

lol you put the two together so the psu remains compatible with older 4 pin motherboards, use those two.

if you do have a PSU that has the 8 pin, and the 24 pin, should you connect them all? Or is that bad? The reason I ask is, my friend has a mobo that is a core 2 duo board, and it doesnt have 24 or 8, it has 20 and 4 right on the board, no extra plugs at all. And his board works fine that way. But if you have the PSU with the 8 and 24, and your board has 8 and 24 on it, should you plug them all in, or will it work with just 20 and 4? Sorry about all the confusion, I never worked with this new pin set up, hehe.

C2D board with 20-pin ATX connector only? Which one is it? Is he using one of those 24-to-20 converters?

Also, many PSU's have 8-pin EPS12v connector made of two 4-pin, that can be separated, so you can plug just one 4-pin into your mobo, leaving that 2nd one loose.

to answer your question though, if there is an 8-pin and 24-pin and you have a PSU with 8-pin and 24-pin...why wouldn't you? yes, definitely use the 8-pin and 24-pin if you have them.

on a side note, sometimes things don't get answered immediately so maybe wait a bit longer in-between bumping a thread, someone will usually get around to answering here within a day or so. HTH

I don't know about the OCZ power supplies, but on my Enermax Liberty the second 4-pin connector is not even keyed correctly for that socket. So I couldn't plug it in if I wanted to.

Doesn't a power supply have to have EPS12V in its specs to be "true" EPS12v?

My Liberty doesn't, but they have these useless extra 4 pins anyway...

Some Asrock MB's supporting Conroe has 20+4. (I have a Conreo945G-DVI+E6300 that works perfect with this "combo").

And:

I have a question concerning the subject:

I have the EPS12V connector on my psu I am not using it though there was a cap on my motherboard so I just decided to use the 4pin. I read up more on it and it said it was to power the video card that is why i decided i'd rather the power not go thru my motherboard and just used the the 4pin than plugged in my video card thru my psu.
