    In that case, the manual is wrong. (Seriously, see page 2-13.) Which I can believe, but dammit, someone should fix that.

    Unless you run in IDE emulation mode (and thus losing most advantages of SATA), you do need drivers to install Windows. ACHI is what you want for true SATA.
    Thanks, I suspected that. Should I use the updated Intel drivers or the one on the Asus CD?

    Alright, so i've got my new p5b to boot with my e6400. it only boots with bios 0302 and 0405. BUT, i only get 1 core in windows!

    I went this morning and bought an 805 D, and it works fine with every bios. Except of course the poewr down for each reboot, but it holds bios settings and both cores show up. It even overclocked to 4.1ghz @ 1.53v.

    EDIT : And now i can't flash back to 0302 bios. it says the bios is older than the existing board. ??...?
    Also, the clock gen beta will not work with this processor in.

I did the same setup on a P5B ealier and have not encounter this problem.

    I also have a second problem with the Pioneer DVR-111D. When the system first boot up, the DVR is fine, I can put a disc in and it play a movie just fine but if I eject the movie and put in another disc, the drive becomes non-responisve and require a reboot. Anyone encounter this one?

    looks like I have this problem as well. My monitor will go out of range and turn off and it seems to be fixed by switching the monitor off and then on again

    I thought the ones in the Asus CD were ok?

    I have my pc disassembled, so I can't make any floppies right now, but I had put the CD in, and went to the tab to "make drivers", and then created a floppy with the Intel RAID 32-bit OS drivers...I thought this is what you are supposed to use during a fresh install when pressing F6??

    ok...all hooked up, but problems from the getgo!

    1. I hooked the SATA drives, floppy, video card, etc....double checked everything, and all seems like it should be. I power on the mobo, and i get nothing on the monitor, and it has a error beep:

    one long beep, 2 short beeps.

    I read the manual and there is NOTHING about ONE long beep, two short beeps.....just TWO long beeps and one short beep.

    The 2Long, 2short beeps correspond to the floppy driver failure....so just for the heck of it, I removed power and disconnected the floppy drive cable, and it still happens:

    one long beep, 2 short beeps.....

    any ideas?

    EDIT:..........tried disconnecting the IDE cables (from CD) as well, and still same crap I guess I gotta take everything apart and start over.

    If you're not using the stock HS, you might have the HS cranked downt oo far. Or you could have my problem, and the shipping bios does not correctly support the core2's. I've found that only 0302 and 0405 will POST with my e6400. All the other bios will not. They all work with my 805 D though. I think some boards got uot with some MAJOR HIDDEN problems. I say this because i've had the issue with TWO boards, from different vendors. Never had any problems with the Ds3 so i know its not the cpu.

    If all it'll require is to turn off and on the monitor, I can live with it. I'll give that a try on the next reboot. The good thing is that I my sytem stays on pretty much 24/7 and the only time I reboot is after drivers or window updates.

    how do I check the Bios if I can't even boot up?

    should I ask for a new board or what????

    So if I read this correctly, when you have 2 SATA drives, in my case a WD raptor 36Gb and a Maxtor Diamondmax 11 you need above drivers to have real SATA in windows XP?? Also what to do when you don't have a floppy drive, floppy drives are for ancient pc's, I stopped using a floppy drive 6 years ago. So how can I load these socalled drivers during windows setup without floppy??

    Also on the Intel downloader site, the file f6flpy32.zip only speaks about RAID, it doesn't say anything about SATA,

    The file below contains the Intel® Matrix Storage Manager Floppy Configuration Utility. This utility will create a floppy disk containing the RAID driver files for installation on a 32-bit operating system. This floppy can be used to pre-install the Intel Matrix Storage Manager driver during the F6 portion of Windows* setup.
    so what to do what to do?? A little bit more clarification is needed before the users of this thread really start to understand all there is to know about this board. I will bet that about 95% of the people with SATA drives are doing it all wrong, let alone knew anything about having to preload these socalled drivers(if at all necessary).

    here is what I've done in the past 3 hours:

    1. I disconnected everything, and took the heatsink out, cleaned both CPU and HS with alcohol, reapplied Artic Silver 5, and disconnected all SATA, Floppy, and IDE connections. Basically, all that was left connected was the case fans, the video card, and the power connectors (both the big one and the EATX12V one).

    I powered it up, and This time I don't hear any beeps, but I still dont see anything coming out of the Video Card. When I press reset, I hear ONE long beep followed by Three short beeps...and seconds later, one short beep.

    2. After trying the above for several times, I disconnected the heatsink, and just put the stock heatsink, and powered it up....similar issue: no sound, but no video, until a reset which provokes the beeps as in (1).

    3. I removed the CPU to check it, and put it back on, and this time did NOT put the heatsink back on (bare CPU....yes, I know its bad, but just wanted to see if the heatsink was causing any issues). I tried it again, but this time the system shut itself down after a few seconds....I assume some sort of heat alarm shutdown on the CPU or something.

    I will try removing one of the DIMMs, but I doubt it is my RAM as I know several people who are running my DIMMs without any problems on this board. The problem is that I'm driving blind....I see no video output! perhaps its the video card, so tomorrow I will pick up a cheap card and see if I can see something out of the card.

    if not, I will return the board for another one.

    I believe you can "slipstream" the drivers onto windows with a cd. Try goolgling it for "how to" and "raid F6" etc.

    For those of you having issues with the monitor not powering on...

    I updated my post #361. I was having issues with the monitor not showing after a restart but it always worked on a full system shutdown. From what I can tell everyone having monitor issue is getting it when OC'ed correct (excluding those who can't even get it to boot ever)? If so then you might want to check something that could be causing it. Now I don't know what every individual has done for there OC but if you have NOT changed your RAM voltage from auto to a set value and have OC'ed I'm going to take a wild guess that it's causing your problems as mine was. I'm only commenting here since it "might" be helpful to some and I'm sure no one will see my update if I don't say something.

    Basically the problem is that when ram voltage is set to auto it could be giving enough for a power up but not for a restart. Strange I know but it seems to be the only logical explaination to what I found. So if you are running your ram voltage on auto and have your ram OC'ed try turning it down to or below your ram's specifications and see if the issue persists. If it goes away then follow my advise and set your ram voltage to the correct value because unlike setting Vcore to auto which will almost always allow your system to boot even if that means setting the value much higher then needed, setting RAM voltage to auto does not seem to cause the same results.

    Just an FYI that might prove to be useless to all of you or could be a possible solution. Just trying to help.

    I found following site that describes how to load these SATA/RAID drivers and slipstream them into XP,

    http://www.xpcreate.com/raid.htm

    I don't have this P5B deluxe mobo yet cuz I am still trying to sell my AMD opteron/DFI system, but in meanwhile maybe some of you here can test this driver out and see if it makes a difference. I am still assuming you need these SATA/RAID drivers eventhough you'r not running RAID?

    Above screenshot shows you how you can test the speed of your SATA disks, so lemme know if preloading this driver for the P5B made a big difference.

    * Processor: e6300
    * Bios Revision: 0614
    * Memory: Patriot 2GB pc-5300
    * Configured Voltages: default
    * Configured FSB: default
    * Configured Ratio: default
    * Configured Memory Timings: 5-5-5-15 (default)
    * Any other applicable configuration modifications:-

    My problem is:

    When system is turned off for a long time, then after turning on 2 weird things happen:

    1. Asus PC probe can't see chasis 2 fan. It reports 0 rpm.
    Fix: I restart, enter bios, enter hardware monitor- bios can see chasis 2 fan, then i hit "save and exit"- and everyting works fine- pc probe detects ch2 fan.
    This doesn't happen when system simply restarts- only when it's turned off for a longer time.
    What to do to avid that ?
    Something with bios power options ?

    2. System turns on with 60Hz refresh rate instead of 100Hz (i have CRT monitor)

    I have radeon x1800xt, catalyst 6.8 installed.

    In catalyst Displays Manager 100hz is set- but still, system starts with 60Hz.
    I also use ReForce (i set 1024x768 to 100Hz- this is the only resolution I use.)- and it also doesn't help.
    Fix1: I have to change rate in catalyst to 60 Hz and then to 100Hz- it works.
    Fix2: enter Reforce, only hit "apply" (100 Hz set is still there) and restart computer- it starts with 100Hz.
    What to do to avoid that ?

    Hows about someone email ASUS and tell them the link to here. I'm sure they'd like to see how much we love their gorgeous P5B-D series... but erm.... well maybe some helps on it!

    I have no problems with it at all (I'm on 0507 BIOS). The only thing is the "fake start". At first I thought it was something stupid like my fans taking too much amps or something (lol) and tbh, that was supported as each time I turned them off fully it booted sweet. But then after OCing it did the same thing regardless.

    Also, the JMicron PATA / SATA splash screen.

    Jeez I wish I had of got a SATA DVD/CD RW+/- now!

    Those are my only 2 gripes.

    Update on this SATA issue, below screenshot is a HDtach bench on my current setup(AMD opteron, see sig),

    and here's HDtach bench done on my friends P5B deluxe,

    we both have the same harddisk, a western digital Raptor 36Gb, notice that HDtach doesn't even read his burstspeeds, its all grayed out, missing bars etc, his average speed is also waaaay too high and obviously isn't correct.

    So is this then confirmation that the P5B Deluxe needs drivers for SATA drives to work and be detected correctly?? And yeah Asus should be commended for having made the most confusing mobo ever.

    UPDATE :

    this taken from microsoft software forum network,

    I found a way to enable AHCI mode without doing a factory-reinstall of the OS and without a floppy. This is the gist of it, although you may want to read some of the replies for clarification. Bottom line, don't allow Windows to search for the driver, and you need to find the driver information file IAHCI.INF (this is for AHCI and NOT RAID). For Dell owners, its on the ResourceCD, and it was also on my HD in the DRIVERS folder:

    WARNING: This went smoothly for me, but I don't think it's without risks. Obviously, if you mistakenly install an incompatible driver, you could render the drive unbootable and be forced to reinstall the OS. I was at a point where I was going to do that anyway if this didn't work.

    ---------------------------------------------------
    1) go into bios and select 'RAID/ATA' option

    2) install xp [not necessary if already installed]

    3) boot into xp

    4) go to device manager and update the ide controller that's connected to
    SATA drive. make sure you force it to select
    'Intel® 82801FR SATA AHCI Controller'
    *note- u can get the driver from dell CD or u can download R78496.exe
    from dell, but in this case, u'll need a PC with floppy to extract
    the image unless u have winimage, but i'm not sure if it's gonna
    extract it for u. *forget to mention that u still need to be able
    to access those driver either by lan, cd/dvd reader, hardrive to
    hardrive,etc....

    5) make sure you don't update the driver for PATA IDE. if you do that,
    you won't be able to boot back into windows regardless of which mode u
    choose in bios for ide controller.

    6) after u update the driver for the IDE attached to your SATA drive, windows
    will ask you to reboot.

    7) once reboot, go into bios before windows start and change 'RAID/ATA' to
    'RAID/AHCI'

    8) save and exit bios, now you should be able to boot into windows and install
    intel application accelerator.
    ------------------------------------------------
    This is part of an extended discussion of SATA drives in RAID and AHCI configurations and the problems with reinstalling the OS if you don't have a floppy drive. By the way, if you're looking to buy a new system, I definitely recommend getting the floppy drive, and I would have if I known that I was going to face these kinds of issues, but Dell (and Gateway-you can't even get an internal one on some systems), by making the stupid things optional, seems to be suggesting that it's obsolete technology that we can do without. Here's the link: http://forums.us.dell.com/supportfor...cending&page=4
    all of this seems to fall perfectly in line with my mates PC, he too has a western digital and going by HDtachs results, its clear that he needs to update his drivers in same way as described in above quote. If anyone could verify this then plz let me know your results. I can't test anything since I don't have an intel setup just yet. You'll ofcourse have to show windows the correct ACHI driver for this new chipset, so don't take the quote to heart as its for an older dell intel setup, but it should work in exactly the same way

    Hmmm, I just read the Intel manual before I got my system, so this wasn't an issue. I think anyone building a computer would know you need to install the AHCI or RAID drivers first to get SATA 2.0 speeds...

    As I said in my explanation a few pages back, if you just install RAID you automatically get AHCI. Then you can build a RAID config later off your boot drive. I see no reason to just install AHCI drivers...But I suppose you can use the above method to go to RAID later if you really want. Just another step though.

    But I just read manuals, if someone else has more information, please share.

    I think you only need the Intel drivers if you intend to run RAID, individual SATA drives work fine without the drivers, at least on WinXP Pro SP2.

    Below are the HD-Tach results for my Maxtor 300GB SATA II drive, with no extra drivers installed, speeds look fine to me, other than the spikes in the graph, caused by the drive being the boot drive.
