Thumbs down OCZ Platinum sticks - Has ANYBODY been successful with them?

Update: It seems this may be an issue only with Asus P965 boards and this particular ram. Everyone with reported success are using Gigabyte boards or 975x boards (minus one guy who had issues with his P5WDH). This may be a BIOS issue, and the OCZ guys might be able to clear this up now that they have a P5B (Deluxe?) for testing.

    ------------------------------------------

I'm talking about "OCZ2P8001G" or "OCZ2P8002GK" if you bought them in a dual channel kit, but it probably applies to the Gold sets as well. They supposedly run 4-5-4-15 @ 400mhz with 2.1v. The reason I ask is because I haven't seen very many overclock successes with these sticks, and if it's a widespread problem, it should be known.

Please list your motherboard, settings tried, BIOS versions used, and what you were able to attain at STABLE settings.

    For me:
    Motherboard: Asus P5B Deluxe
    BIOS: 0405, 0502, 0507
Settings tried: EVERYTHING! Maxed out the voltage, disabled everything, enabled everything, everything set to auto, dropped the CPU multiplier just to test FSB\Ram...

The result? The only BIOS that works is the one with broken timings (Can't change them from x-7-7-23) and only at 3Ghz (8x375). With those settings I'm stable for 19 hours in 2xPrime95. If I try to drop the CPU multiplier to 6, I'm still limited by the 375mhz FSB.

The results with the 405 and 507 BIOS are identical. The ram timings are fixed, but since they don't allow 6-7-7-23 settings in the BIOS (max is 6-6-6-18), I can't set up the same exact scenario as with the 502 BIOS. I cannot overclock at all, and even at stock settings my system is flaky. Some reboots will result in errors in Memtest after seconds, other reboots will let me run multiple passes without issue.

I have no idea if it's the RAM itself or if it's just incompatible with the P5B-D. The OCZ guys were nice enough to send me an updated SPD file to flash my ram with, but all that solved was fixing cold boot problems.

It might be related to P965 motherboards. I think all of the success stories I've heard so far are from 975x users

Yea but if you RMA them you just get the same model back. I don't think it would solve anything (Unless they are giving out Rev2s?)

Well i've had nothing but problems with the 2 sets i've had. No one at OCZ informed me that i needed the rev2's to work how i want.

They do fine running 5-6-5-16 but will not run 4:3 divider 4-5-4-15.

I've given up, don't have the patience anymore.

I don't know if the Rev2s solve anything, but at least they are different sticks than the Rev1s.

I'm undecided now....need more info on this...was about to pull the trigger on the 6400 XTC Plat R1s....maybe I should spring for the EPP (7200 4-4-3-15) models instead ($100 more, but still cheaper than the R2s)....

    Or...suggestions?

    (R1 = $249 after rebate, R2 = $329, EPP (7200) = $314)

Running mine at DDR2-800 4-4-4-12 at 2.0 vdimm 24/7. They ran fine at DDR2-926 4-5-4-15 with 2.1 vdimm.

I could not get them to run DDR2-1000 at 5-5-5-15.

I would say they are good sticks for the money since they can be had for about $150 after rebate. But they do not match up against the HZ's.

What the world needs is more geniuses with humility, there are so few of us left.

I think the real question is, what divider is everyone using. Yea mine works fine 1:1 or anything above that at rated timings. However, using 4:3 divider and the rated timings, the system refuses to boot.

I'm pretty sure that OCZ gets the same Elpida chips from Samsung that other DIMM makers get. The only things specific to OCZ would be the PCB, SPD programming and speed binning.

I bought a 2x1GB kit of OCZ EL Platinum XTC from Frys for $130AR and they booted up on my DS3 at DDR2-800 (5-5-5-15) @1.8V and I'm now running them at 1:1 DDR2-800 (4-4-4-12) @2.1V. They also work fine at DDR2-830 (4-4-4-12) @2.1V using 333FSB and 5:4.

Maybe you have a bad stick?

No, read the thread. There are people with problems, and it's not due to bad sticks.

I bought the P800R22GK dual channel kit (2GB Platinum XTC rev2) and I will soon be putting them into my P5W DH. Ive got a question -- the motherboard has a disclaimer when I open the box that says OCZ memory needs the voltage to be set manually by putting in 1 stick in the furthest slot from the CPU and booting in the BIOS. What voltage should I be setting it to.. (for stock operation)

    It's 2.1v

With the Rev2s you shouldn't have any of the problems some of us are experiencing

i've got 2 gig plat 4-5-4-15, mine must be revision 2 as i'm running them at 850 4-4-4-15 with 2.1v and a p5w-dh, don't think they've got much more in them but they were really cheap and they are working fine so i'm happy

Rev2 sticks are officially rated 4-4-4-15 instead of 4-5-4-4-15, so you might have Rev1
