    Gigabyte 965 DQ6 + E6700 = crap

Just been trying to to get a retail E6700 to run together - but only been running into a 360mhz FSB wall - regardless of CPU multiplier.

Either the CPU or the board has a FSB wall @ ~ 360mhz.

With E6600 the FSB wall is at 500mhz FSB - but with the 6700 all is pain...

Running latest Bios F3E - and I have about had it with this board

At least you got your E6700 in after all.

    Very very strange indeed...:-/

Thanks Eva + Kesnel - you're right, indeed I did test the board with a E6600 and managed to get the FSB up to 500mhz FSB

With the E6700 I tried with any possible combination and setting to get to a somewhat fun overclock but even with 6X, 7X, 8X, 9X and 10X multiplier nothing would allow me to get either the CPU? or Gigabyte over the 360FSB limit.

It's too early to tell - but until I have the time to test the E6700 on a better board - I rather tend to think it's the 965 DQ6's problem

Haven't had my E67 long and it seems to be doing the same thing, Mike, and in a different board. It's a B2 rev|6 gen. I am stuck with 360 currently. I have just been using a 10x multi though.

    Where have you guys been?

I needed this kind of imput for the past few days.

I've had my E6700 retail since last monday and I cannot get past the 360-380 FSB wall.
I've tried every single thing in the book (mine is a short one) and I'm about to give up mysel.

    I can do 350 pretty stable, and I have completed 3dm06 @ 3.7ghz and 3.8ghz
(370FSB & 380FSB) but rebooting the PC is always a gamble with anything past 350FSB for me.

Wasn't it discussed that 965 chips are having a problem with 4 mb cache chips?

    Didn't I see a thread about this?

Yes there was a thread. But then how would you explain the 500MHz FSB on an E6600 above?

Any of these CPUs been tested in a 975 as well as the 965s?

I guess we need someone with a different 965P make or a 975X board to test a retail E6700 to see what or whose problem this is!

Yeah, but he was using 6X multiplier.

I know I don't have to tell anyone this, but just because you can get 500 fsb on 6x doesn't mean you can get it on 10x because then the CPU (not the mobo) becomes the limiting factor.

sorry to hear about this mike.

if you got 500 with a 6600, then sell me the board my 6600 is screaming for some 500mhz love!!

Just a bad chip. For every monster overclocker on these boards there's someone else with a Conroe that can't even do 3GHz. GamePC ran a review today and mentioned they couldn't even get their 6400 above 2.9GHz lol, meanwhile my own 6400 hits 3.7GHz easily on air, as it does for multiple other XS members.

    Luck of the draw.

Ironically the 6700 I also have maxes out at the idental core speed as my 6400, 3.7GHz, but the FSB is only at 370MHz on it versus the 6400 being at 450MHz to hit the same speed.

Thats makes the 6400 the faster of the two most likely :o

I experimented with that, wondering if the faster FSB of the 6400 could overcome the 4MB cache of the 6700, and out of ten synthetic and real world benchmarks the 6400 was able to tie/win in three. The other seven it lost...but not by much.

F it. I had to remove this board from my case to even install the darn CPU because of the Ninja HS. Windows will start loading @ 10 x 380|3.8GHz then it always crashes. I can boot 3.6 and then set 3.8 GHz with clockgen, and it's very unstable, yet won't crash for a while. Setting 3.9 GHz = a straight up freeze. I may play with volts and see if I can get 3.7 GHz. It's real odd because 3.6 GHz is smooth like it's @ 3.0GHz. Something else may be up that I am missing. I am also going to replace my HSF with one that does 2.2k RPMs instead of 1.4k.

I know my X2 4400+ behaved like that. It did fine up to a point then you had to pile on volts to get from 2.7 to 2.84GHz.

Mike try loosening the fit of your cooling..................i've noticed that at certain "bend" the DS3 performs worse and if extreme it doesn't even boot

That is wonderful news. Thanks! I was hoping the additional FSB I've used to overclock my E6300 would help make up for the cache deficiency.

Did you test with DIVX or X264 encoding times? Encoding seems to be the biggy when it comes to cache size.
