ausus p5w dh bios chip problems?

on tuesday i ordered everything for my new computer incl. a asus p5w dh deluxe - which was nearly everwhere available.

today i got the information that the shipment will be postponed because
beacuse they have problems with the bios chip - and i check availabilty with other shops and it is not available anywhere anymore.

This refers to my country germany - any information about this problem?

i told people that the bios and/or bios chips were screwed on these boards...

Asus is always a little screwed in one way or another, got that confirmed after i received a P5W-DH today. But only minor problems so far, i will not complain too much (yet).

Back to topic, my P5W-DH bios seems to work ok, updated to 701 just now after fighting a while to find a working way of updating from WIndows, had to connect floppy and use DOS/Afudos in the end anyway... The board hanged after first restart, had to cut power to make it work again, i was a LITTLE nervous for a while there, the posts about bad bios chips i had read here flashed before my eyes, like this:

I noticed the store i ordered from had lots of boards on stock that time, yesterday suddenly out of stock.. Mysterious. First i thought lots of people were getting ready for Conroe, but i just dont see that happen here in this AMD stronghold where you gotta hate Intel and MS to be one of the cool guys. I checked other stores and Yes, no P5W-DH but still approximately same stock of other Conroe ready boards like AB9/AB9 Pro, so for sure people are NOT getting ready for conroe up here. The boards might have been recalled by Asus Netherlands from all over europe? I just hope my bios chip continues to work for a while.

I used the built-in flash software accessible from the BIOS screen itself with a floppy to get 0701 on my board. My board also went frozen after reflashing and required a power cycle to come back up. Don't worry me like that Asus!

Phew, at least I'm ready for C2D now... feels good.

The problem is probably that the current chipping bios "502" will NOT post with Retail B2 stepping Conroes, or at least the 6800 in my and others experience. Yes, I would call that a big problem for Asus, since retail shipping of conroe is only a week away.

The problem is also due to the fact that Asus shipped a number of boards with BIOS 0401 which will be DOA with a retail Conroe.

It's incomprehensable why Asus would ship their flagship Conroe MB with BIOS's that don't support the CPU!!

when i got my p5w dh a few weeks ago, it was the 401 bios on it. since i had my 940 D i just slammed it in and updatet my bios to 502, no post then.
took my ppor 940 D out again in with the little C2D, and wosaaa, running "fine"

Don´t think i have any other problems here, but do notice, i talked to a few guys and we all are having problems with the remote that are bundled. it turns on the pc and nothing more, Asus don´t know what could cause this.
But then again, who´s gonna use a remote for the pc... not me so don´t care.

I got the confirmation from my shop that asus instructed the shops to stop selling the board because of the bios 0401 (not conroe ready) so after the shops realised now thats the only problem they are just flashing to 0701 and now start to sell the boards again mine will be shipped today.

Answer for what bios for P5W DH Deluxe is C2D ready?

I have seen question floating about and wanted to make it clear that the 502 bios is not, I repeat not compatible with C2D. The bios that is compatible is 701
If you go to Asus's website and check their CPU support it will tell you

If you are a converter from AMD it's best to call tech support and ask for a Bios dept, they will send you a new bios chip for $5 shipping or $20 to overnight it. Call 502-995-0883 then hit 0 for the operator and ask for the bios dept.
If you don't reach her leave your name and direct phone number. She says they do return calls.

Honestly I think its unacceptable that they charge $5 for a new BIOS chip when the box says Core 2 Duo on it, support out of the box is certainly implied, I was lucky I had a Pentium D to flash it with already.

Understood, I suppose we will know the next time they release a MB before the CPU is released.

Im amazed that Asus is going to charge the consumer of a $250 mb that doesnt even work with a retail CD2 as ADVERTISED on the box, $5 to ship a chip. They should be eating that.

I know what you mean, the whole thing is stupid. I mean 5 dollars ain't a big deal, but nobody should pay for their F***ups.
On the box it says you can run the damn Core 2,

I called Asus Tech support 2 min ago, dude said that "Asus" doesn't even have the latest Core 2 Cpu's on hand, only engineering samples LOL
Asus will feverishly work over the next few weeks to do a bios update for those "newly released" Intel cpu's. WOW. That is tech support at its best.

He did mention that i can send my bios chip to them and they will re-flash it for 5 dollars (Shipping).... I asked him why? the bios chip is probably a 2 dollar item at best, why don’t' they just send it without me wasting time on shipping lol, he said that it would cost 20 dollars to send a new one + 5 for shipping (if i didn't want to send my existing bios chip)

I also asked out of curiosity how I’m supposed to remove this bios chip off the motherboard, he said use paper clip lol, so good news, no additional tools required,

You guys were just to early to buy this board. When i got mine it had 0701 allready on it. But what is the problem, you don't have "friends" with a spare celeron or something ?

Or a near by shop to flash a different bios on it, usually they do this free of charge at least in my country?
