high OCs on air = the better Rev 5 step B1 ES chips

hot = X6800 retail (Rev 6 step B2) so far.

It was only a fix for RAID5 afaik, but it seems to have hamstrung these chips quite a bit.

More data still desired.

How many step 5's did you see run prime @ 4ghz though? Almost all of them were only single thread loaded so much less heat.

Yeah. It's almost unfortunate that these are SPi beasts, because everyone seemed obsessed by dropping a core and trying to hit WRs.

This is bugging me. I've already laid out a pile of money on E6700 and rocket RAM and I can see, clock-for-clock, an E6700 (ES) is about 15% faster than my x2 4600 @ 3GHz. So, obviously, I want a lot more than 3GHz out of it... but how much am I going to get?

I will run 3D Mark05/06 later this morning and post the pics for you. I will be trying higher over the next few days to see how high she can get! I'm also awaiting the arrival of a Swiftech MCW5002-775 peltier cooler early next week which will definately help keep these temperatures under control

Allmost all step 5 will do 4ghz..Who needs prime.
And for the dual threaded... cmon spi is single threaded. fastest core count's, and fastest score counts.

Well, the Rosetta crunchers need dual everything of the most realistic stressfulness. Not interested in WRs, interested in 24/7 100% week in week out at the highest stable clocks. It's still xtreme, it's the heavyweight xtreme.

In order to reach dual prime stability I had to raise the voltage in the BIOS to 1.5625! It is becoming increasingly clear that there is a difference in overclockability between the engineering samples and the retail product.

I wouldn't get too hung up on these temp readings. I'm not convinced that they are correct, but even if they are, the overclocks while maybe not quite as good as the ES's, are pretty good and I don't think they would be possible if the chips were running hotter than what they are designed for.

The video cards are slightly overclocked using the Overdrive feature of the Catalyst Control Center. I believe both cards are overclocked this way, as opposed to using ATI tool where you have to create profiles for each card individaully and apply each time you reboot. Hopefully, improvements to ATI tool will make overclocking Radeon cards easier in the future. The Swiftech waterblock should be here by next week

Congrats on a nice set up vmsein. I have a few observations and comments I'd like to share.

First off, your temps are right in line. Perhaps a smidgen warm...but just barely. Although the Conroe's run remarkably cool they do report what seem to be higher temps. I beleive the sensor chips & SMBus readings just need to be improved. Heck, my X6800 could run at default settings on a stock OEM heatsink with the fan unplugged...no kidding. Bottom line, if its stable its cool enough. Go by how warm your block gets.

Second, not every ES was a superclocker. My ES is doing just about what yours does. I think what your getting may be mainstream results. Of course being in an enclosed case hurts (not sure your's is, but mine is).

Thanks very much for your kind remarks, mdzcpa, as I find your input to always be helpful. Except for the externally mounted Thermochill radiator, my system is fully enclosed in a Lian Li case. I'm relieved to know that my temps are right in line for this type of setup and cpu

If the temperature sensor is not reporting correctly and you can practically unplug the fan at stock speed, what is the actual temperature ( in degrees C)? Has anyone measured it?

well you can use core temp, and it'll show the same, the temp sensors for conroe are actually in the core itself, core temp taps those directly. Conroe does run hot when overvolted, volt for volt it's hotter than AMD X2. I have E6600 stepping 5 B1, 1.4v idle with PA120.3, Storm and D5 with 7/16 tubing is around 35-40 degrees depending upon ambient. Many other users have the same.
