Actually the Ultra-120 is only about 18mm thicker than the Ultra-90. So there should be no issues with Ultra-120 + HR-05. If the spacing is tight, you can always mount the 120mm fan at the top of Ultra-120 to pull air towards the PSU.

    Idle : 31c
    Load: 47c

Like I said, I dunno how accurate the temp probes are on the mobo.
FYI, the ambient temp was about 27ºC and CPU temp was recorded via uGuru monitoring sw. Tests was done in SilverStone TJ05 casing with side panels installed. By the way, I loaded up 4 instance of Prime95 to ensure 100% CPU usage.

You can view more info on the test setup on this

Btw, whats the rated CFM for the Panaflo 92mm fan that you used with the XP-90C, and how fast was it spinning?

This is the link to the exact fan I was using:

    http://www.frozencpu.com/fan-87.html

It was running at full rpms. I too used 4 instances of Prime95 to ensure 100% load

Prime95 doesn't give maximum temperature and it can fluctuate a bit also, not the ideal software to test load temps with for CPU HSF. Look into "K7 Burn" (google it)

Ok then, how about mobo and load Vcore?
Was the heatsink hot to touch at full load?
Tested in a case or open bench? Casing and PSU type?
Anyways, your ambient was 5ºC cooler than mine, which makes it impossible to compare your results with mine. But logically, if you minus 5ºC from all of my results, the Big Typhoon VX "should" settle down at 47ºC at full load .

Yup, you're right and I also got higher temps with S&M (on K8) but haven't really tested it on P4 yet.

    Mobo: Asus P5W DH
    Vcore: 1.38v
Heatsink was warm, but not hot to the touch
Case is an Antec P180 with all the side panels on
PSU: PC Power and Cooling Turbo 510 Deluxe Express

I am not doing this to flaunt my ePenis I was just comparing.

the "VX" only stands for altered mounting method then?

K7 burn works fine on P4 btw

You guys think the Scythe Mine, Ninja or Artic Cooler will fit on the P5B Deluxe?

Those caps do not look promising
    Rig 1: E6400 @ 3.0Ghz // ASUS P5B-DLX // G.Skill 2GB DDR2 800 @ 4-4-3-4 // Western Digital and Seagate Drives = 1.5TB HDD // eVGA 9600GT KO
    Rig 2: FX-55 @ Stock // MSI nForce 4 Platinum // Mushkin 1GB DDR 400 @ 2.5-3-3 // Western Digital Caviar 160GB // Sapphire X1950PRO

Was thinking the same thing. Guessing no whitewater blocks will mount on those Asus boards. Aren't the swiftech Storms flat bases also? edit: no the Storm's base is stepped...

Maybe the cap height is less than the height of the IHS when the chip is inserted?

Well, it comes with a new & easier mounting method, new fan and built-in fan controller on the heatsink itself (which is kinda stupid).
The important thing is motherboard removal is no longer required and AM2 users can rejoice!

I'm not sure about Scythe heatsinks but Artic Cooling Freezer series will fit in there without a prob.

The CPU socket layout looks almost identical to the P5W. I using a Mine with a P5W. I had no issue with the caps but there was a clearance issue with that black IC just to the right of the caps.

I has to shave about 1 mm off the extrusion to get the clearance necessary for the push pins to seat otherwise it would hit the top of that IC. It took a couple minutes with a Dremel.

How about with intel 775? Do aftermarket HSF (like the ultra 120 I thinking about getting ) need mobo removal or do they mount just like the stock Intel HSF where you just push down on the those little white push-pins?

For the Ultra 120 .. you need to remove the mobo, but since you gotta install the new chip (C2D) you going to have to take it out anyway ... I never understood why taking out the mobo was such a big deal .. take only a few extra minutes ...

Looks like Big Typhoon does very well, but i suspect Tuniq Tower 120 still better, to bad they didn't add it in.

Obviously you are planning on overclocking your C2D since your here on this forum so why would you be worried about whether or not an after market cooler voids the warranty? They can't tell what cooler you had installed on it if you RMA'd it any more then they can tell if it has been overclocked.

You could of just set the priority to 10 on two iterations because that's as much load as you're gonna get with Prime95. Run 4 instances or 10 instances isn't going to do any more then 2 instances at high priority.

I don't know if you noticed, but the chart you posted is PWM temps. Poor choice.

I bought a Scythe Mine because of its reputation for being very quiet, and because it was only $35 shipped at Newegg, including a 100mm fan. It's also ridiculously easy to mount. I'm sure it will be more than enough for Conroe.

I found the TT Big Typhoon for $40.50 + shipping at eWiz a minute ago. I grabbed it with an Abit AB9 Pro for $148.32.

That's the non VX version, which doesn't havce the 775 push pin mounting, right? Is the VX available anywhere yet?

I couldn't find the VX on Thermaltakes website . so i don't expect to see it in stores for a while , though i think the regular Typhoon is pretty nice HS as is. Not sure if i'd want the push pins holding such a big HS on.

Yeah i wouldn't ither. I would say push pins won't give quite as good of contact with the CPU. I'm sure the VX version will be priced $60+ as well.
