    needmorstuff's Chiller

This was an interresting build over the last few weeks, alot of experimenting invloved.

Gary contacted me asking for a chiller to hold 400w at 15c, sounds easy rigth, well its not.

Firstly I had a Danfoss FR8.5 compressor, it held the load but sounded really really bad. Then I moved on to a Electrolux MP90FB 9cc compressor, a little better but was running quite high pressures, more silent though. Eventually I popped the final compressor in, a R12 1/3hp 12cc Tecumseh. It runs alot better, little noisy when starting for a few seconds but then smoothes out nicely and runs nice and smooth.

Gary also told me budget is tigth so no fancy cases, controllers etc. I ended up using a Ranco Thermostat and it works perfectly. Current setting holds water temp between 14 and 17c. Capable of sub zero if needed but Gary wants nothing of that No condensation issues or insulating pipes.

It holds 400w of resistor load easy which in real life is alot more. I believe it can hold 2 or 3 pc's to the current setting.

    Some specs:

    Compressor Tecumseh 1/3hp 12cc
    Evap: Coaxal HX 8' long
    Controller: Ranco O16
Condensor: From old Ice machine, big though with custom shroud
    Fans: 2 Papst typ9956
    Gas: R22
    Captube: 5 feet 5 inches 0.031

    Some pics:

I never tested to max temp as he wont use it at that temp, I did test for max temp on the 8.5cc compressor and temps was around 3c with 400w. I had problems with freezing liquid and used a weak pump etc etc which is also a reason I did not test for max temps.

Johann - really good piece of work there mate.

What sort of price would one of these be in a case?

In terms of noise - better than a mach?

I reallly like the no thrills approach - 400w @ 15 degrees, brilliant.

Johann went the full mile to please me with this build, he forgot to mention that I changed my mind about a drop in coil and decided I wanted a coaxial one, very accomodating and professional.

I didnt request the different compressors, it was all down to him as he wasn't happy - very nice to have someone like that building for you.

Fast turnaround as well considering, abut 3-4 weeks from initial pm to dispatch.

    I am cooling the following:-
    ATI x1900xt heavbily oc'd
    opty 170 @ 2.9
    dfi sli-dr chipset
    dfi mosfets

    using

    apogee
    ek x1900 block
ek nf4 rev 1.1 chipset block
    mips mosfet block

all pumped by an iwaki wmd30rz

unit will be housed in a garden storage container outside my study (external) for noise and heat considerations.. will post final pics etc. in a couple of weeks when i get it all done.

Can't wait to see it running and the temps you get out of it. Going to be a great system by the sounds of it.

Doesnt matter, if the temp is below ambient you will get condensation.

Actually it depends on the dew point.

indeed it does, and this is dependant on humidity and temp... but i reckon i will be ok with these temps.

well in my study I reckon between 18 and 23 (cnetral heating keeps hluse at minimum of 18 in winter and in summer the max we get in uk is 29/30c so indoors 23ish?

now indoor humidity is a different matter all together. I would need a barromoeter to get those figures.. but from reading i think about 50% as it aint mouldy in my house and I don't get many static shocks.

joahnn definately knows what he is doing!! I however am a different matter

also he has no experience/control over my conditions, and he will not have to pay for my system when i set temp too low - eek.

I would insulate since it would make sure there is no condensation, and it will help with temps. I will do a test for you tommorow.

I would insulate reguardless. Maybe you will have a few people in your room for a while, the humidity will jump up, a drop will form on a line and slide down and hit your motherboard in a bad place and boom, possibly a completly fried computer. Not worth the risk, unlese you are really rich or something.

would rather raise water temps to 20 than insulate.. I basically do not have the time, 2 kids and a wife to keep happy.

The goal of my project is having cooler than normal watercooling temps, my study quiet and cool. Not sub zero or even near temps.
