    p5w dh heatpipe ???'s

ok I'm looking at getting the p5w dh deluxe board, but I'm also getting a lian li v2000 case and remember reading about the heatpipe boads not working well upside down, but I've seen some that work ok. My question is this one gonna work upside down or gonna overheat?

In retail box is extra fan for those who need it, so it will work in both positions.

Should have the same heat transfer & exhaust properties whether it's vertical, horizontal or upside down

well they're finally starting to pop up in the us, so I'm still debating between this board and the dfi, but I think I'm leaning more to the asus

Seems like a pretty good choice for mobo.

Before i shell out 230 Euros+ on a mobo, i'd like to be sure of certain stuff. So i'm staying put until RD600 rears it's fan- and heatpipe-less head

I believe that RD600 is going to be pretty hot chipset, but we will see it later.

I installed my p5wdh into my v2000 yesterday. I was having some instability problems with my d930. Wouldnt go over 285fsb. Board would power on for about half a second and then shut off. The chipset heatsink was very hot. Almost too hot to touch. I installed my Swiftech cooler and removed the heatpipe from the mosfet cooler. The MB temp in bios went from 59-62c down to 38-39c. And im running at 300fsb (4.5ghz)right now. I Have not tried to push it farther yet, its good enough till I get my conroe. Im not sure what they normally run at in a normal case. I don't think it liked being upside down though. Here's a pic:

When you watercool your CPU (or use a single stage) , you must install the fan cooler provided by ASUS to cool the northbridge & PWM .

Sorry I don't agree. I have a Silversotne TJ06 case and just like you, the board is upside down.

Heat pipe on the chipset will overheat. The liquid can't be where the heat is (the northbridge) so it can't transfer the heat to the heat sink.

So with the board upside down, you will need extra cooling on the Northbridge since the heatpipe will not be effective. Worst, the heat of the mosfest will be transferred to the Northbridge (while it should be the opposite)

I asked Asus and Gigabyte and they confirmed that in email.

Heatpipe can work in any direction, but not against gravity !

    Now your options:
    - Get another motherboard
    - Add a fan to the Northbridge
    - Replace the cooling (you will have hard tome to find one for the mosfest)
    - Get an awesome airflow in your case and hope it will work for a while. (but if you overclock, the Northbridge will overheat anyway)

btw SilveradoJ442, what did you use to cool the mosfest ? You seam to use the supplied fan, but without heatsink ?

Yes, the extra fan is installed on the mosfet sink. Should I be ok leaving that cooler the way it is? I had to cut the heatpipe off right at the base of the heatsink to seperate the two heatsinks. If not Are there any other aftermarket heatsinks that would fit that area? I like the fan and heatsink that came with the board. Nice and quiet.

SilveradoJ442 - Thanks! I'm installing the same board in v1000 this week and was concerned that inverted would be a problem. I have a few mcx159's laying around so now you've proven my solution....

    Ah you cut it..

Yes it should be fine. the Northbridge is well cooled and the mosfet are also well cooled. That was a good idea to cut the heatpipe and keep the heatsink for for mosfet. Both will be happy that way.

yeah too bad there wasnt a removal method that didnt involve the word "cutting"i was always wondering how those NB swiftech helicoil heatsinks worked.
i used to have a mcx478 for my old northwood and loved it. heaviest dang heatsink i ever had. lol. but the helicoil did its job.

You know whats odd is i have a V2000 myself with a MSI Diamond Plat 939 board. it too has a heatpipe and the NB never gets over 32C... Why is it, the Asus one cant work like the MSI? I guess ill order a mcx159 just incase since my Asus will be here in a few days.

yeah I've got a spare chipset block I should be able to use on it, but I'd rather not have to cut the heatpipe on the factory sink( that would make a warranty rather difficult) anyone know of a mosfet cooler that will work on them?

    I have questions about this.

The square copper part of the chipset cooler that says digital home on it seems to have some kind of plastic on it.
Is that supposed to be removed?

My motherboard temp per asus pc probe is higher than the cpu by about 10c
    Cpu 38c-motherboard 48c.

My cpu is a i630 200fsb cpu oc'ed to 230fsb and the memory shows per cpuz to be running at 1:2 460mhz.

I am using a thermaltake big typhoon cpu heatsink and without the asus heatpipe fan.

The motherboard is mounted in a atx server size case and sits in a vertical position.

Does the motherboard temp seem higher than it should be?

If you do, you could always remove the heatpipes and install your own NB cooler. (And assuming you have aircooling, the MOSFETS would be cooled without the heatpipe attachment anyways).

Now I'm not super educated about heatpipes, but here's what I've gathered so far:

If you think about how a heatpipe works, and in the case of the P5W DH, the chipset is at the bottom, the mosfets at the top. The chipset releases the most amount of heat, which moves heat (or evaporation of a liquid) to the top of the pipe and disperses it thru the mosfet sink. When you turn the motherboard upside down, the liquid in the heatpipe is reversed and won't give as good of results. Think instead of dispersing heat into your mosfet heatsink, dispersing it into your chipsets heatsink. How is the heatpipe supposed to know when it's upside down or not?

    Edit: Here's something else interesting:

"The condensed working fluid then flows back to the hot end of the pipe, either by force of gravity in the case of vertically oriented heat pipes, or through capillary action in the case of heat pipes containing wicks, or heat pipes that are orientated horizontally relative to gravity."

So I guess it depends on if Asus used gravity or not.... but I'm not sure how good it would work with the wick since their are 2 "HOT" ends on the Asus motherboard. I'm guessing they used the gravity method.

    More info:

    http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Heatpipe

"When one end of the heat pipe is heated the working fluid inside the pipe at that end evaporates and increases the vapour pressure inside the cavity of the heat pipe."

"In summary inside a heat pipe "hot" vapor flows in one direction, condenses to the liquid phase which flows back in the other direction to evaporate again and close the cycle."
