Only few 975X boards. So many 965. Why?

    Ave,

Browsing through the Conroe Boards thread, i see tons of 965 Boards, but just a handful, about 10, 975X boards. Why is that? What about us Crossfire people? Not too much choice there. The boards look great & suffice requirements, but less boards means heavy prices as well... as i'm seeing with ASUS P5W DH Deluxe.

I never really understood why 965 doesn't support Crossfire to begin with. But what i don't understand further is the reason behind such a small amount of models with the 975X chipset compared to the 965 Chipset.

Motherboards based on 975 chipset...are very, very costy.

965 chipset, however, should be much cheaper.

Why don't 965 support Crossfire? Us Crossfire people are stuck with the costly 975X.

Well, because 975 can. If 965 has every feature that 975 has, not many would go after 975 (more pricy).

After (and including the 965), intel is not licensing Crossfire for its platforms. See here

to me it sounds like nothing more than the 875 and 865 chipsets.

the two were very very similar and when enabling PAT on the 865 it made it pretyt much the same as the 875.

not sure what the differences are but the benches i read shows the 975 to be slightly faster.
if there is a big enough price difference, then the 965 is the way to go, the performance difference is very minor and you wont even notice it. but you would save some money.

but by looking at the asus prices of the 975 and 965 there isnt a price difference so just go buy which is the best overall.
i'd avoid the p5WD2-E Prem. the 975x board just take my word for it,, avoid it. it may have been good in the beginning but.. blah..

my Rev 1.03g is sitting at my place right now so i will test it tonight, if it is better than the 1.02g i will know within 5 minutes because of the issues the 1.02g had.

personally,, i dont have a preference. its all about the best bang for the buck,, even if its a $250 board,, if that gets you the features you need, then go for it. and the same for a $100 board. if it does what you want. then buy it. no one would ever blame you for buying what you need.

Look at the price difference between entry level boards and SLI / Crossfire. Same applies here. 965 is a mid-range, no-frills board. 975 is the cat's meow with Crossfire / SLI ability.

I think the 965 is going to be a pretty decent chipset. A bit like the 865/875 days.

I'm waiting for my P5B Deluxe courtesy of an ASUS PR. Told them that we have some ES chips and want to review a board, and they agreed to send one out . I really wish they would send us a P5W DH Deluxe instead though...I'd rather have a proven board rather than a potential winner.

I hope they get a new BIOS out ASAP...

Well i guess i do get the point. I guess "975x is the enthusiast's chipset" sums it all up. Thanks for the input folks.

I'll probably be going for the ASUS P5W DH Deluxe. Everything looks awesome in it... it's a little over my price range, but i'll see if i can make provisions for it.

Technically though, what is the difference between 965 & 975 besides Crossfire? I do keep hearing the word "performance" in relation to this... but nothing too specific.

they supposedly improved the 965 memory controller a tad, and it has the new southbridge which should mean slightly better disk performance and maybe usb as well

I am seriously considering the P5WD2-E Premium so I would appreciate hearing if you find the 1.03g any better. I haven't owned the 1.02g or followed people's experiences with it so I don't really know what the problems with it are...
