    Intel "Kentsfield" coming to XS...

You guys know how much I like to stir the waters....

Just thought I would get you all buzzing about the new "dual die" Conroe chip coming from Intel Q1'2007.

The first ES chips are like a dual E6600 Conroe....
    1) Quad core
    2) Socket LGA775 (to be comptable with all VRM11 boards including the Intel "Bad Axe")
    3) Similar to the Smithfield core in that it is two dies on one wafer. Future quad core chips will be a single die once the shrink to 45nm happens in Q3'2007.
    4) 2.4Ghz, 4MB L2 cache per die for a total of 8MB L2 cache.

These chips are going to be FAST even with a moderate OC of only 3.0-3.2Ghz (although I see no reason why they won't go higher given appropriate cooling).

Keep your eyes peeled for an XS exclusive first look in the next couple of weeks.

    very very well!

I'm really looking forward to seeing how much the FSB-Bottleneck will affect the performance!
Notice any grammar or spelling mistakes? Feel free to correct me! Thanks

Thanks again FCG can't wait, have intel finally decided to let us upgrade a cpu without needing a new chipset?

which applications are we expecting to see the biggest increase in? will gaming get a boost, cause that would be unreal. the reason i ask is because i always hear people saying a higher clocked single core is best for gaming (amd fx line), but i'm curious what kentsfield will do for sure.

Sorry, in my book nothing is valid unless its in a case, and hence, a "normal" environment, by all means go nuts on cooling not a problem, but an open top setup with an OC ppl claim to be stable when in all reality inside a PC it probably won't be? Thats just unacceptable to me.

considering there is nothing on the market right now that even utilizes two cores the way they should dont expect to see anything huge.

the increase will come from the backbone of the conroe, and hte massive L2
dont forget the more L2 the harder they traditionally are to clock and keep stable at high clocks.

my 955 XE is as close as you can get to a quad core right now and i'll be honest.. i dont see anything special about it.
the simple fact tha an X2 chip will smoke this 955 XE pretty much tells its own tale.

but a friggin quad core Conroe.. sweet jesus im VERY sure the performance will match the price tag .. oops switch that around lol.

how will the conroe be more impressive? one die can't access the other's l2, and even if it could it would be slooow going over the bus (they use the bus to talk to eachother, right?)

i think we'll see the biggest gains in rendering, 3d content, audio/video compression and the like. right?

Your 955XE is as close to quad core as my 3.06 P4 with HT is to my FX60

Max TDP is at 120W level. I wonder how much heat dissipation and power consumption Kentsfield has.

Any idea of the pricing of these Kentsfields? Maybe I'll wait till Q1 before upgrading.

Am I right assuming that only Vista and other OS (not XP) will be able to use 4 cores?

I think Kentsfields are supposed to be the new "Extreme edition" CPU, while Conroe being the main market.. So I don't think we will see Kentsfields under $900.

The real question is, will current apps benefit from quad-core? I also question what they'd be called? Core 2 Quartet? Core 2 Cuatro? I think they'll just all be Core 2 Extremes.

quad core would rock if Intel or AMD does reverse hyperthreading

8mb cache and 4 cores would blister the IMO useless superpi benchmark but would rock at gaming and encoding.

I have to agree here. The Conroes are of course kick-ass, but more because of overall architecture than two cores. Conroes will be great for multitasking, but until developers catch up, I don't see how 4 cores does anything other than increase the heat.

Of course, since Intel is now a multi-core company, developers should eventually be coding therefore...
