    Found here
Source states that this is Conroe XE 3.33GHz rev.BO. But check out those caps on backside. Totaly different from what`ve seen on Conroe

doesnt look like any lga775 chip i'm familliar with either

    those are 0ohm resistor packs.

in retail versions they are likely to be either not there or replaced by caps. they are probably still testing frequencies and have not yet determined the values of the caps.

    very early chip

edit: could be a mechanical sample

Meron is 479mPGA. Woodcrest ? Hmm - might be.
Intel socket test tech surely doesn`t sound like intel confidential for ES

XE's will start shipping for reviews in 1 month..
When Mercedes brought their C111 to Talledega years ago and blew away the closed course record did it count? Yes..
That was a "factory" car and a "one of" that no one could buy and was never sold.
Records are records and that is a fact so get over it.

"Intel Socket Test Technology" makes it sound like its a CPU for testing out a new socket rather than something else.
However it's undoubtedly an LGA775 cpu of some form (assuming no photoshop, of course), just from counting the dots. Do 30x33 (perimeter) - 15x14 (central cap area) leaves you 780, -5 for pins that aren't there, we have the magic 775.

But without markings, it could easily be an original processor for testing out LGA775 or something, maybe a Northy or Prescott. Nothing to suggest its a Conroe, certainly not a Conroe XE.

Or maybe it`s really is Conroe XE. As Gorillakos mentioned we`ll find out that soon enough

Good thought - perhaps it could be something like co-processor. But is there any dual 775 socket mobos ?

anyone have a pic of a mechanical sample to compare this to?

this has been bugging me and i'm pretty sure that's what it is, but can't find any pics to verify.

What's a mechanical sample? One that works, but doesn't do the speeds hoped for later in the products life? e.g. the 800mhz Hammers.

I think my theory was right...

as far as i can make out, all it does is to check the connection between motherboard and processor is working...put simply.

Looks like a mechanical sample....ship them out to board makers before you have your silicon finalized so they can get some boards at least close to working.
