Am I the only person to do the volt mods?

I've come to a couple conclusions, the Vdimm volt mods work very well. The VGpu however... is very... touchy... it "sort of" works. But it does not bring enough stability to run high GPU clocks for reliable gaming. I've had to push it down to 460/1500 for World of Warcraft, FEAR, BF2, etc. Otherwise the dreaded blackscreen happens after 15-30 minutes of play.

The 7800GS cores are just rejects that couldn't cut it as GTs or GTXs.

Kin Hell, it's not PSU issues, the 12v rail on my PSU idle/load is 12.11/12.08v with everything attached (PC P&C Turbo Cool.) I think the sound is just the card's coils screaming for a lower clockspeed.

Also, I got rid of the cold bug by disabling temperature monitoring in the BIOS using Nibitor 2.8 and NvFlash 5.30 . BTW don't play with the delta if you do flash, it makes the card more unstable.

I don't think this card is very good for OCing at all. But I guess it is fast enough as it is.

No Mav, I havn't modded the card at all. As things stand for me atm, a change of Rig is in the air taking me to the PCI Express platform with a 7900 GTX. My GS card will go with the 3.2 Prescott/P4C800ED as std.
The GS is running 495/1430 without any issues other than the cold starts!
The AGP community cried out for Nvidia to address more speed & I guess they did just that, but I feel it was somewhat rushed & what better way to get rid of the Failed GPU's!
Chuck them at the AGP users.
I can be such a cynical old Fux0r sometimes!

The chirping is caused by the fact the card was set up wrong by Nvidia. They need a bios revision so it pulls more volts as you clock the gpu higher and higher the chirp will get longer and longer. It has nothing to do with the molex plug that is plugged into it!!! don't believe me? Next time it is chirping pull the plug then it will chirp in stereo. It simply does not get enough volts to clock the gpu high. All the poor bastards that ran out and bought a new psu cuz reps like the ones over at e-VGA were telling them too are getting double screwed. It reminds me of a parts changer not a mechanic. A mechanic fixes the problem, a parts changer just throws parts at it till hopefully he finds the problem and it is gone which always costs more money also.. It needs a bios mod like we were able to do with the 5900FX cards. you could mod the bios to give the card either 1.4 or 1.5 "ultra" volts up from 1.3. Worked well for many cards. What's too bad as many factory OC'd cards like the XFX are chirping at their OC'd stock speeds. I am lucky mine doesn't start chirping bad til 513/1600. I was able to run 3D03 at 510/1600 without a single chirp. Nvidia is stuck now tho' cuz if they admit this problem and put out a modded bios most of the world will not be able to flash the bios themselves so nvidia will have to pay to get this done all over the world. So with that in mind I would say they won't ever admit to or fix this problem. So companies like XFX who are going to get most cards returned are going to really get screwed.... ATI will really reap the benefit!!! Cuz between this cold bug and low volt bios I am going to move up to an AGP free board and a ATI Card.
The only way to show Nvidia I am pissed is to hit them in the pocket book

Nice one Wedzilla, so do you think I should drop the Idea of the 7900GTX and go for the ATI X1900XTX with the DFI NF4 SLI-DR Expert?
I can't believe I'm going back to AMD for numbers!

I don't believe the 7900GTX is suffering from this cold bug and anemic volts issue. The 7900 should be a great card. The only reason I won't go with it is to let Nvidia know I am pissed at them I have wriiten them and will continue to do so. I want this problem fixed by them. Hey either card will rock your world the 1900XTX or the 7900GTX. God I rmember when we were all flipping over the 4600 then the 9700 Pro. The potential of this 7800GS is really great I just hate to see it go unrealized.

Has anyone heard bout the Gainward 7800GS with 20 pipes and 512 ram? Looks like the PCB design is alot better too.

Man... screw this I'm half tempted to part my rig, sell it, and move over to Conroe.

I've held on to Canterwood & AGP as long as I can, purley because the Intel offerings are so crap compared to Canterwoods performance. Taking into account the expense of 2Gb of DDR2, a PCI Express graphics card, Mobo & CPU, the overall cost wasn't going to justify the small improvement over my OC'd Canterwood. The stabilitiy at 260fsb for the last 18 months has been awesome. I was hoping the GS would satisfy my hunger for speed & now I have bitten the apple, I want more!
The GS is a fantastic card by AGP standards & my BFG OC running 495/1450 with no mods is nothing to be sniffed at. Going to these speeds from default 400/1250 upped another 1600+ 3DMark 03 points & that Gob Smacked me!
The potential of these cards is mental & I'm still barfing at moving back to AMD. I hope I have the same stability this Prescott/Canterwood rig has served.

(My PSU is a OCZ Modstream 450 so no loss in confidence there).

I am wondering if removing that current override protection will do the trick for me.
Anyone else experiencing this setback problem when overclocking one of these?

Or can anyone tell me which voltmod has proven to be the biggest success as of yet?
Im confused cause there are so many pictures here and i dont know exactly what to do...

    Thanks for any help.
I have that exact same card I can only overclock to about the exact same numbers. I can do 470 w/1350...pathetic since this is a preoverclocked card and nonoverclocked cards are knocking it's socks off.

I spent the day messing with this card!! I found that by pulling all the little plugs out of my molex plug and testing them out, they all fit loose on the molex plug on the back of the card. So I squeezed them just a little so they would barely go on over the pins in the plug in. I mean they are tight!!! The chirping stopped. And the card clocks better than ever!!! I just played COD2 for a couple hours with my card at 500/1500. Soon as i ended the game I upped the Vid card clocks to 513/1603! no reboot. I just started 3D05 to see what it would do. Well it ran smooth as silk and I got a new high score!!

It would appear mine were already tight!

    No improvements here!

    *Edit*

After further testing, It would appear I have spoken word from the proverbial Arse!

My BFG card is now sat at 496/1500 ......christ eh! The rig is still going & I just might get Power strip out to see where the RAM will go as coolbits is Maxxed out now. Just a personal thing, but Power Strip sucks 4 me.

WeldZilla, could you give me your 12v and 5v readings? I have some suspicions...

Yeah Maviryk My 12Volt on the fluke meter is 12.196 Volts and my 5 Volt line is 5.089Volts on the fluke meter. Since i tightened down those molex pins to where they will hardly go over the plug in on the card it has quieted down and just hauls ass. So it is all good here. I have set ne highs on 3D03 and 3D06. The 3D03 is still the only over 17000 on the orb and @ 17342 is just hammering second place. I ran it last night for a friend at 501/1507 that gave me a score of 16857 which is enough for number one. I ran it for a friend who wants one and wanted to see the clocks at a more sane speed. I hope you guys get all these issues solved cuz I got to tell you when they run right they really are great!!

    Wheeee!

Not sure they have the Fx 57 Set up right tho...I can get 15400 from my BFG GS @ 490/1450 with a 3.2 Prescott @ 244 fsb on Canterwood. The Extra pipes should be a hell-of-a boost.

You can buy them in almost any PC-store, or make make them yourself by modding an old HS.
Note: You should be very carefull with the hsi chip, it's not as strong as the gpu, and it will get crushed if you don't mount the HS very carefully.

hey thanx Mad Max, i am thinking of using the old p3 heatsinks. the damn hsi cores are so weak... i cracked one when i had the 6600gt... i am thinking of making some shims for the core as i did for the dothan cores... sigh now the biggest problem is mounting the waterblock to the gpu... the holes are so small... i don't want to drill a bigger hole ><

I'd make sure the hsi cooler you're goining to make is not higher than 1-2CM, if you make it higher, than it wil probably crush the HSI. (I've nearly experienced this myself:P).
A shim would be a nice solution indeed, it would make the mounting of the hsi cooler a lot easyer.
What kind of waterblock are you using on this card?, I used a asetek universal blok, and it did fit perfectly.

    Hi to all:

Kin Hell, Maviryk I have that insupportable and horrible beeping sound. Not all the time, sometimes and especially if the PC have been turn on for a long time. So I suspect it must be related to temps because if I turn ON the PC with everything overclocked to the max I don’t have any noise gaming or what ever, but if the PC is turn ON for a long time even browsing in internet I hear sometimes that "pathetic beeping sound". I am not sure if it comes from the 7800GS or from the PSU. PC is stable all the time no random reboots.

WeldZilla: I have done your "squeezed molex plug" No problem since then... hope the noise do not come back!!!
    My PC:
    CASE: NNPC & CORSAIR TX650
    MOBO: ASUS P5B dlx

I am not sure if it comes from the 7800GS or from the PSU. PC is stable all the time no random reboots.

WeldZilla: I have done your "squeezed molex plug" No problem since then... hope the noise do not come back!!!
Hi, Nuevototem & welcome to The Xtreme Systems.
Having heard this issue myself & waved "bye-bye" to another 550W PSU, I'd say by the sound of it, the Molex Nipping has sorted your issue for you. I'd still be tempted to have your PSU checked tho. LMAO @ the sound eh!; It's like it's croaking ready to roll over & die aint it!

So it seems we have drifted away from the original topic of voltmodding the beast. I have a 7800 gs myself and want to do the same thing to it. I am currently maxed out at 485/1500 tried higher on the memory with powerstrip but got artifacting after a few minutes. Card is still nice and cool though. I love the heatsink on the bfg oc model. MY CARD IS STARVING FOR VOLTAGE HELP ME FEED IT!!!!
