    NV5 Silencer Revision 3 Installed on a 7900GT

I decided to install an NV5 Silencer Revision 3 on my 7900GT.
Stock Cooler Removed, Core and memory cleaning with isopropyl alcohol.

    G71 core, nice and shiny.

Silencer Installed, Notice the problem yet?

Yeap, the silencer is too long.

Had to modify my case a little...

Temps Idle dropped from 45C to 38C. Load temps dropped from 67C to 50C while running RTHDRIBL for 5 minutes...

Thats with the core at 560mhz and the memory at 1800mhz.

As far as noise goes, I cant hear my computer at all anymore. The silencer is well, silent!

Im about to go test a modified 7900GT bios that has 1.4volts applied to the core and see how I do now I have aftermarket cooling. Ive tried the bios with stock cooling and I got to 600mhz core, but I had tiny artifacts in 3dmark03.

Good job man, but you could have modded the cooler instead of the case

Just make sure that when you use the bios you also try it with a 20mhz delta to test if it is really better than the original one. You can also use 1.3v instead of 1.4v if you want it to run a little cooler

Good luck, and have fun with your card

    basically:

    stock heatsink stock volts:

    44C idle, 64C Load

    stock heatsink 1.4volts:

    50C idle, 76C Load

    NV Silencer 5 stock volts:

    38C idle, 50C Load

    NV Silencer 5 1.4 volts:

    44C Idle, 57C Load.

at stock volts it didnt help my overclock at all. however at 1.4 volts i was able to overclock the card from my previous max of 570 to 600. (note that the 570 overclock had no delta in the bios and the 600 clock had a 20mhz delta so in effect max overclock increased to 620mhz). My memory overclock didnt change at all, max of 1.8ghz.

Other than being too long, does it fit well? I mean, do all the ram cooling pads align with the ram chips in the card?

One more thing, what would be the best way to shorten the cooler? Using a saw?

why didn't you just chop a inch off of the cooler itself, then chop your case to pieces?

i thought about cutting off some of the coolers exhaust but i dont have anything to do that with. this is a cheap case anyway, only 40 bucks, not really worried about it to be honest.

Accelero X1 is a litle better in performance and more silent too.

No idea if it fits on a 7900.

accelero x1 is better, but it doesnt exhaust the heat outside the case.

That's what I thought. I wan't as little hot air in my case is it's almost fanless.

I'm also more concerned about noise and wonder if the NV5 is better in this respect.
