Stock is a 20mhz delta in 3D, so that's the most accurate

some weird crap is happening here imo:

with the bios you gave me un moddified and clocks at 560 1650 i only score 14k in 3dmark03. removing the throttle clock from the bios and moving the 2d clock from 275mhz to 400mhz gave me 19k in 03. however when overclocking (580mhz 1650mhz) and running 03 the test will get about half way done and then the system will hard lock and the display will go blank. not seeing any artifacts at all though

I like 7900GT = 1.2V. Thinking of trying 1.3 or even 1.4V? You might think its only 0.1V, but power/heat increases exponentially with voltage.
1.3V = 17% more power/heat.
1.4V = 36% more power/heat.
not including extra heat/stress from power regulators.
In addition GTX (650) is about 40% higher than GT (450).

STOCK 7900GT HEATSINK = LIMIT OVERCLOCK

Simply amazing that just a few months ago, before 7800GTX 512MB, people were pushing hard just to get to 500Mhz, and beyond was no-mans-land except for those with cascade. All of a sudden, 650, even 700Mhz is just "stock". W O W

higher voltage, higher overclock, smaller lithography process (90nm) = higher heat density (perfect contact, and copper base essential).

Those heatpipes on the 7900GTX heatsink are not just decoration

edit: check the power regulator IC chips on the PCB if they are getting too hot. After discharging static by touching metal case, touch and see if you can hold finger 10-15sec... if not, then too hot).
they are typically in black TSOP package (looks like mini memory chip)

i do have an nvsilencer 5 installed on the card though. 3dmark05 ran perfectly artifact free at 580mhz core 1800mhz ram. currently running 05 at 590mhz core 1800mhz ram

yeah i have a thread on the installation a few threads down. 3dmark05 ran fine at 600mhz core 1800mhz ram. scored just over 10,000. currently testing at 605mhz core 1800mhz ram.


edit: 3dmark05 artifacts a little at 605mhz core. 600mhz core, 1800mhz ram is artifact free. not bad for a 7900gt. thats like 150mhz overclock over a stock gt.

Maybe it's better to put an extra fan over it blowing on the PCB. Remember that the 7900GT uses a different PCB than the 7900GTX. That's the reason I gave this mod only a 25% chance of working as it would be really weird if Nvidia gave this PCB the abillity to supply this voltage.

I'm fairly sure this mod doesn't work though and the not editible difference was caused by a moronic programmer and is totally insignificant.

The difference between the 7900GT and 7900GTX voltage table were actually 2 things:

1.) The 7900GTX had a third entry that was disabled after it was set to 1.4v first, that's pretty odd I think (stupid programmers?).

2.) 7900GT has a "0" value and the 7900GTX a "1" value, which is a part of the voltage table or it has some other purpose. It is not far after the voltage entries, that for sure. It can't be canged with Nibitor so I'm not sure if this is the think that makes the difference, I edited this to the 7900GTX value in the 7900GT bios.

i think im done playing around with the 7900gt. was fun seeing how far it can go at 1.4 volts but im not comfortable running it at 1.4 volts all the time. back to 1.2 volts for me.

I saw you posted that 570mhz was your maximum overclock with the stock bios. But on what standard was that based? Benchable, artifact-free or 24/7 stable? And is it 600mhz now as you can run 3Dmark at that speed, or was 570mhz just your 24/7 overclock?

with the 1.4volt bios and card at 600mhz core, 1800mhz mem. max temp i got with rthdribl was 57C using the nv silencer 5.

600mhz core was not possible using the stock heatsink and stock volts. flashing to the 1.4 volt bios using the stock heatsink allowed me to run 3dmark03 using 600mhz core. it artifacted but it ran.

after installing an nv silencer 5 and using the 1.4 volt bios i could only reach 600mhz core before i saw artifacts in 3dmark03. i stopped at that point.

coolbits detected 570mhz core as my max overclock when i was using the stock heatsink. havent tried using coolbits with the nv silencer 5 installed and stock bios.

also when i flashed to the 1.4 volt bios with the stock heatsink and ran rthdribl my temps were in the high 70's.

The difference between "running with artifacts" and not running can be pretty small. So this isn't very conclusive.

And how high were they with the stock bios? if you didn't test this, can you please test the temperature with the Silencer using the stock bios and the 1.4v at the same clock? This is the only thing that would be conclusive.

Testing the maximum overclock isn't really conclusive. The higher vcore can fluctuate as the the pcb is not designed to deal with this. This also means that 1.3v may increase your overclock compared to 1.4.

So I just ask you one thing: Does the temps increase with 1.4v or not? Please test with same clocks, same cooler in rthdribl.

I think a lot of members would really apriciate it if you run this little test

So if you want to be 100% you have to perform the rthdribl test once again with both biosses at the same frequency and delta. And make sure that both tests are done with a closed case or both with an open case to eliminate that factor. And let it run for atleast 15 minutes. Or you can take a multimeter and messure the voltage at the point specified a vr-zone.com
