I just removed IHS off my opteron 146. Temps dropped from 50C load to 38C. I will post pics later because this time I cut my finger a bit and it is still bleeding
Lol similar results were with all my venices without ihs but luckily I didnt cut finger then. I might reinstall IHS because it will only up temps a bit (comparing to naaked chip), at least that was the case with venice.

    EDIT:
Pics as promised, notice that vcore is higher when IHS is off. Not the best chip but 3Ghz is ok at 1.65V with IHS or 1.6V without.

Your very brave I'll give you that. How did you find the removal of the heatsink and what did you use to get it off? Also, what cooler are you using?

Well, I would not take IHS off FX cpu
I am using razor made by Gillette I am also using rubber gloves to hold that razor. Cooler is either TT BT or custom watercooling.

    Thumbs up

Well, after collecting some experience I'd rip it off from any CPU:

Were you wearing those rubber gloves when you sliced your finger open Was it the old Gillette Mach 3 Turbo that you had on the job? Cracking razors lol

Which cooler were you using from the screen shot of the awesome 3Ghz that you had it running at? Was it water of the TT BT?

Also, if your running it at 3Ghz at 1.65v, are you going to leave it at that or run it slightly slower at lower volts?

i don't think that shot was with phase as the temps look too high for MachII....he's probably got it on water or air........my air idles at about 26-27C with 3.1GHz 1.63v

Look any closer to my SIG - see the word "PREVIOUS".........

Promy sold long time ago - this is done on water (not chilled) and room temp of ~20°C.

Yep, on air. Of course I don't run it at that speed, but technically it IS stable. I keep it at 2.9GHz.

Which air cooler were you using for that dinos22? Also, did you see my reply to your post on page 1 after you mentioned keeping the 1/2 divider? What do you reckon?

Just read your post..........yeap dividers are funny buggers...sometimes they work and sometimes they don't especially odd ones like 150/183 that sort of thing

in terms of my air cooler = Thermaltake Sonic Tower pictured in my thread http://www.xtremesystems.org/forums/...ad.php?t=88876

I read somewhere some old Tbird rubber pins, but I don't have any. Is that absolutely necesary? Also, the amount of AS5 should be much less than with IHS (I assume because the are is way smaller) Thanks!

After removing the IHS I prepare the chip with 4 small pieces of Armaflex - only that large to fit to the 4 corners without hitting any IC on the PCB.

U can cut them easily out of those Armaflex rolls with a skalpell.

I get them to the PCB with 4 small drops of Arctic Ceramique - doesn't do any harm to the PCB, keeps the Armaflex pieces in position and is easy to remove with some Acetone.

When U get the cooler to the DIE now it will always connect in the right angel without cracking the core.

Straight pressure never is a problem - I gave so much pressure to the naked DIE caused in bending my aluminia made holding clip for the cooler !!!

Had to use a hammer and a wooden block to get it right again.

So in my opinion pressure is no problem to the naked DIE - as long as it takes place in the right angle.

If you think what you are doing and if you are careful then there should be no problem

I am still testing my cpu. We will see

Thanks a lot for the help but.. sorry I have no idea what Armaflex is so I'm researching (googling) now . I also need the correct blade (have some tajima cutter ones, but I'm afraid those are very thick).

Anyway could you send me any photos? Thanks again!

This is the right tool - do NOT use anything else. Only a razor blade is thin enough to do the job and the plastic case of the ceranfield cleaner prevents the blade from cutting to deep - U can't damage the ICs so.

I replaced the blade on the pic with a newer one before I started.

ARMAFLEX is insulation stuff for tubes to keep 'em cool or hot.

Again, thank you very much HARDCORECLOCKER

Now I'm gathering the nuts to try that first on a 3200+ Venice that "only" does 2600 and I've found is impossible to sell.
