I have two Opteron 170s. I have a 0550 VPMW and also a 0550 UPMW. Both steppings are reported to be good clockers.

I got the VPMW first and right out of the box I managed to get it running at 2.8GHz (SPD timings for RAM) at a Vcore of 1.44v on the stock AMD HSF that comes in the box. This chip is F@H stable on both cores as well as stable for COD2 and FEAR.

I tried to run the VPMW under my Mach II GT but it wouldnt clock past 2.4GHz or 240HTT. So it has the cold bug

I bought the UPMW as I wanted to get hold of a chip that didnt have the cold bug.

Anyway I threw the chip in my rig under the stock AMD HSF and I couldnt get it past 2.4GHz for love nor money, and it wouldnt even boot to Win XP past 2.5GHz... I initially assumed it was a poor chip within the batch.

But then I started reading this thread and it was comments made by mag|c on Data and Drive strength that caught my eye. I read about his testing and I decided I had nothing to lose and tried his 5/1 recommendations..

WOW what a difference this made. Basically it cured all my stability issues and the UPMW now runs at exactly the same settings (2.8GHz) as the VPMW and is 24/7 stable for F@H and plays COD2 and FEAR not problems...

So a big thanks to mag|c for making his posts and let others know that it is worth fiddling about as even if you think you have taken the ram out of the equation to find max overclock by using a divider, it is not always the case. My ram runs 280FSB without any tweaking of the ram settings under the VPMW. My UPMW wont go past 2.4GHz on SPD settings even using a ram divider... But change the Data and Drive settings and BANG, problems solved, its like the chip has been given a new overclocking ceiling.

    Cheers mag|c
Curious, how how voltage are you giving your memory? and which other timings are you usiong besides 5/1 ..
    I can't get mine errorfree over 270.
My CPU seems to hit a wall at around 2800 ...need more and more vcore to keep core0 from failing...can that really be because of RAM/memory controller?

I experimented with air deflection and this helped me. Temp untill i make something a little better.

Yea liquid helps. On my setup in my sig and my opty 170 ihs less my max load temps at 2.7ghz @ 1.4v is 29C w/ random jumps to 30C and drops to 27C.

I am running the DFI Expert and was getting in the 50's according to smart Guardian; Expert has 5 mosfets. I am experimenting as well and have system in case not out in the open like yours. But what I have done is I am running a 90mm fan aiming at the 3 main mosfets near power and one 90mm fan above that one which actually doesnt even aim at the mobo but is at the top of the casewhich actually makes the cool air flow down across the mobo; Current results are around 34-35 celcius according to smart Guardian. I have removed the top fan as well and brings my temps uo around 40-42celcius; all of these temps are running dual SP2004. Not sure where the PWM IC temp sensor is, but mosfets do not even feel warm anymore so temps must be fairly accurate.

I am also in the process of running my Opty 170 0550 UPMW 434L @ 2.9Ghz on air (ThermalTake Big Typhoon) Currently 24+hours Dual SP2004 stable @2.89Ghz(Air)

Location of sensor http://www.xtremesystems.org/forums/...&postcount=286 on expert. I have similiar readings with Motherboard monitor, I took readings with non-contact dig. : thermometer that i use at work to find the actual hotspots and agree PWM IC is not the hot spot.

There ar some smd's(?) i believe that's are what they are that are as hot as mosfet's located next to cpu socket.I try and get air flow to this area also. In my setup air from 120mm fan is blocked by ram.
This rig is a dedicated cruncher runs 24/7, that is why the Matrox PCIe card is there

I just got hold of an Opteron 170 myself

Full stepping is CCBWE 0550UPMW 1387408L50577

That is almost identical to ben805's 1387408L50589 which does over 3000mhz on 1.35v

I have not had the time to insall it yet, but I have a Mach II GT. What do you think my chances are of 3ghz plus?

    Cheers

    1.42 vcore for 2700.

Fails prime within a few minutes @ 2800 with 1.42v. Tirying more volts but anything over 1.5 leads to 50c+ load temps. 2.8 fails after an hour or so (core 0) core 1 still going.

I've read that altering the driving strength can help stabilize Oc's but my board doesn't have the same options. The options I have available are Drive strength (disabled or weak) and DATA drive strength (15%,30% or 45% weakened)...anyone recommend a setting please (running corsair 3500ll)?

    Cooling with TTBT.
