X-fi and overclocked = Crash and crazy noise,,, need help

    Here is whats going on...

I have been crashing when running at 2.6ghz ,, I could be browseing the web,,, transfering files,, or playing games, has happen during all three,,, the system will freeze and really crazy noise and random static and squells start coming out of the speakers,,,

Now I am dual Prime stable,, super PI, occt, ran 3 loops of full memtest and 3dmark and sandra and it all passes just fine,,,,, yet the problem persists,,, I even tried running dividers and more volts thinking it was my ram,,,,

Now if I down clock to stock 2.0 ghz I cant get the problem to happen so far,,, and I just pulled my X-fi sound card to test if its the cause and I played 35mins of quake 4 at 2.6ghz soundless (painful) and it wont crash and runs fine,,,

So how can It be that when im overclocked and using X-fi i crash,,, but if its the X-fi then why do I crash when browseing the web or making file transfers,,,

Someone over at Overclock net said it could be my SMART featuer on my harddrive failing but i have no clue how this is involved,,,,

    thanks

1st yes DFI has smart disabled I jsut checked ,,,

also scratch the X-fi theory I just got it to lock and freeze by running a virus scan, with the x-fi card pulled out,,, ,, im thinking maybe that hard drive theory has something to it....

The guy on the other forum said that he was getting the same problem of a crash and weird noise and formatting his harddrive and reinstalling everything fixed it,,,,

Im hesitant to format and start from scratch with drivers and setup so id like to know for sure,,,

How could Overclocking make my harddrive unstable?? and why can I run stable at all the Test apps but not in real time windows,,,??

If you overclock is unstable you will corrupt your OS.

now my question is this is it that my current overclock of 2.6ghz is unstable and that is messing up my windows at various applications,,,

or could it be that when I was testing and running at 2.75 + and so on trying to find the limits of the chip I could of corrupt my OS...?

Also why do I seem to run smooth at 2.0ghz,,, if my OS is corrupt wouldnt it be corrupt regardless of my speed once I corrupt it?

thanks im just not sure how corrupting the OS works,,,

Could be that too, only way to know for sure is to do a format and reinstall at 2.6Ghz and see if the problem comes back.

    no its the z503 crucial ballistix 2gb kit,,, 2 X 1g...

could it be that I need more vcore?? I was originally running prime stable at 1.475 vcore and 2.6ghz,,, but when I started having stability issues i uped it a bit its at 1.54 right now which should be plenty for 2.6 but who knows,,, I have pretty top of the line water cooling so temps arent a real issue,,,

I have tried running the ballistix with a divider and it didnt help the problem,,, and it passes memtest so im not sure what to test next,,, I mean I guess I can give it 1.6 vcore but it seems a bit excessive for a 2.6 overclock,,,

What do you mean by "Dual Prime Stable"? 24 hrs? 48 hrs?

I've had a "stable" overclock fail after 50 hours of dual prime...
also you probably don't want to give such a huge voltage bump if it is 24 hr dual Prime stable @ 1.475 vCore.

Have you tried any of the Fade Memtests?

I had a similar problem in games even though i would pass prime, memtest, etc. Once i turned down my ram speed the problem never came back. It was weird because normally the memory problem would show up in prime or memtest. Try the divider again and try settings that are more relaxed than SPD.

okay so I have raised vcore to 1.6 ,, that didnt help so then I dropped speed to 2.5 and it still crashs,,,, now when it crash this time I got this really super high pitch noise coming out of my speakers,,

why when my comp locks up all this noise is coming out of my speakers,,,

and to top it all off now when I go to exit windows it just gets stuck at the shutting down screen,,,

Is my windows install FUBAR and should I just format?

there's nothing wrong with your card!
It's normal that you get strange sounds when your system crashes during gaming.

    Could you test another PSU?
Maybe these few watts are too much for it?

So you're saying that the card is supposed to do that? I had exactly a problem like that, my PC would lock up in WoW, and a ssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssshhhhhhhhhhh hhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh noise would come out of the speakers... I have and Audigy 2

Does it sound like an old 56k modem when it crashes? I had a similar problem with an Audigy 2ZS, crashed during gameplay system hangs, black screen then a weird screeching/56k noise from the speakers and the problem must have been a corrupt driver install as the only solution I found was to reinstall the operating system, then the drivers (all at stock speeds - then once installed, overclocked to previous settings), as simply reinstalling the drivers didn't work. Once I did this all the problems disappeared. Creative drivers are known to be very picky at the best of times.

I dont think its my power supply but I could try another, its a 600watt and all the numbers stay pretty steady,,

as for the noise yeah its kinda like a 56k modem,, gets all load and static lik sometimes with a super high pitched,,,

I guess it may be time to format and reinstall drivers and see how it all goes,,,

demonbane23, had exactly same thing, I also thought it was the X-fi at first but I removed it and I still had the problem. I was also Prime, memtest and OCCT stable, but games crashed within 25mins of play. To cut a long story short, its the Ballistix, I swapped out virtually the whole PC with no effect, I then swapped the ballistix for some OCZ TCCD and no more problems.

Honestly man, try some other ram you'll find the problems goes away. I just RMA'd my ram to Crucial, waiting to see what they do...I'll let you know how it goes if your interested?

To cut a long story short, its the Ballistix, I swapped out virtually the whole PC with no effect, I then swapped the ballistix for some OCZ TCCD and no more problems.

Honestly man, try some other ram you'll find the problems goes away. I just RMA'd my ram to Crucial, waiting to see what they do...I'll let you know how it goes if your interested?

yeah definetly interested in how it turns out,,, I guess it could be the ballistix they seem stable in memtest but i get all those weird crashs,,, If i run them really slow at like 200 mhz they seem to be okay but that is super low speeds,,,

Maybe ill drop a bit of money on the OCZ and see if it helps the problem,,, I wonder if i just really need to RMA my ballistix and get a new pair,,, hmm

I have x-fi and whenever i get lockups or crashes, the X-fi card goes crazy and outputs some horrible noises.. but only when the computer isnt stable and crashes.

yeah from everything that everyone has said so far on the two forums I have been posting it seems to not be an X-fi issue as much as just that this is how my X-fi card responds to a system crash. I just cant figure out why I crash when playing games or surfing the web but not when I stress test the computr for hours,,,

I guess I have to start somewhere and the ram seems like a good spot I guess,,, if im not staying Ballistix what is the next best option,, do I go with OCZ platnium? ....

also would uping my LDT or chipset voltage help at all,, its the only voltage I havent tried tweaking
