Question WinXP SP2 and nForce2 tweaker

Curse the damn SP2, curse them!!!

First - there you can download nForce2 tweaker, a usefull (highly) tool for professional (do NOT tweak if you don't know what you are doing!!!) overclockers:
    http://forum.abit-usa.com/attachment.php?postid=379291

It does run on any chipset, just don't try the button Set, please.

As you can see, it is a zip archive and containing the IO.DLL file. Nothing wrong with it, just copy it to the system32 directory and it will run - except you are running on the damned XP SP2 crap.
Win2k SP2/3 and WinXP SP1 run fine, but SP2 complain:

    and then

Well, Im admin and why in the name of God I can't run normal software, that is beyond my understanding. Can anyone enlighten me, how to make THIS work?

I understand that it probably require some tweaking of the security settings, but hey - what to do? I don't like the idea of installing XP SP1 just to make it work, so I hope someone can help me to archive the goal quicker.

Thanks for helpfull responses - and if some explaination WHY this is happening will be done - the better.

PS. I tried register the dll:
    regsvr32 \windowns\system32\IO.DLL
...but it does not work/help at all...

    Help???

I would very much like to add that user trodas has, of course, administrator privilegies and it is into the administrator group...

Hmm.. Weird. My typewritter NF7-S is on SP2 and I just opened up NForce2 tweaker V0.25b and it works
Man, it's been like 1yr since I actually started that cool little proggy again

Update: As a matter of fact, io.dll is in the same folder as NF2Tweaker, not in systems32...

    Talking

It is weird, I know, but I can't manage it working, no matter what I do
(for the first time, of course...)

I even delete the IO.DLL from the win directory (tried system32 and windows only dirs) and still NO LUCK. Allways and all the damn time - this stupid message about provilegies.

Any help, or I just have to resintall the SP2 crap to SP1a???

(it is clean SP2, no more updates...)

I hear that it might be something like:

"SP2 guards system files more rigorously. MS calls it 'Data Execution Prevention'. That could account for your problem. You can create an exception on a file by file basis, but you can't turn it off. XP and XP-SP1 don't have the DEP security feature."

...but a solution, how to disable the protection for the file is still need. Anyone???

I repeat - it happen when I reboot the machine and the nForce2 tweaker is about to run by istself - applying startup settings after reboot...

    Question

Mmmmkay, accorfing to the M$, the 'Data Execution Prevention' could be easily disabled when moding the Boot.ini file like this:
    http://support.microsoft.com/kb/875352

Set the /noexecute=AlwaysOff into the Boot.ini, however the problem persist.
Still is says that IO.SYS is present, but the driver cannot connect to and EPrivilege

Damn with this stuff. So, it is reinstall of the SP2 crap the only one solution? Already it survived a vires attack, so the SP2 has some advantages, after all... XP SP1.0a machines as well, as w2k ones get infected

    Anyone...???

I would just reinstall OS on top of your current installation, without formatting. That way you keep all of the applications except for contents of My Documents folder. It's gonna take you 40 minutes after which your problem might be very likely solved

trodas, try CBId. It has many tweak functions for nforce2. I had a great opportunity to play with it. Good luck!

    Thumbs down

Sorry, but CBid don't even run on my machine (latest version), dunno why. Besides, it probably did not feature the startup settings, right?
(it does work on the testing2 machine, but it did NOT allow me to tweak the settings I want to tweak anyway)

And I wanted to fix this w/o reinstalling of the system, damn

Well, then you should use my Dragnott. It doesn’t have any GUI and is configured via ini file.

    Question

charlesbronsen - looks like no-one can figure it out either WinXP SP2is just plain crap, IMHO. The problem is, that reinstalling the machine means that it stop folding for a while, and that is out of question ATM, due to massive race So, a XP SP2 solution will still come handy...

VVJ - GUI is not need as long, as it can change the advanced timings and the latency things as nForce2 tweaker do, run on startup fine and did not cause any problems
    Can it?

    I mean mainly these:

Possibility to select even lower latency timings (as low as 0) will be even better, as the machine have absolutely NOTHING to do with any graphic or PCI devices and all speed is put to the folding AND lower latency improve the speed of CPU a lot (hexus PI benches, for example)

    Hi trodas,

I´m having exactly the same problem. On my previous installation of WXP+SP2 I wasn´t receiving this message, but SP2 was the last of the installs (After NF2tweaker), this could solve the problem, will give it a go later.

Well, thanks for observation. This supports my idea, that when SP2 sniff something, that was not in system before, it complain about it on the EPrivilegie...
It is insteresting that this does not happen when one copy the IO.DLL into windows\system32 directory before SP2 - it means that SP2 check only new stuff and somewhere has to be list of this...

Yet it is sadly not a solution

Damn, I wish I never ever install the SP2 crap, god, how much I hate this sh*t...

    Hi trodas,

I uninstalled SP2 and stuff related to install it after all the drivers and the message still appears.

I noticed that if I boot into windows with my cable modem connected to the ethernet card I got the cursed message, but if I unplug the cable and boot twice the message is gone and NF2Tweaker loads normally Give it a go m8.

    Regards, KODE.

KODE - interesting findings, KODE So it permanently changes something that produce the cursed message and it is related to network somehow. Hmmm. Unfortunetly my NIC cable has to stay, it is the only one connection that matter and it was used to the folding/movies storing machine, so... Not a solution anyway But we are getting somewhere!

    Question

Anyone know, if there is any more user-friendly application in the world that allow tweaking the drive strenght and slew for - best all four supported by nF2 - dimm banks???

As for the NF2 Tweaker - I checked with FileMon how many things this proggy acces and the list is, well, excessive
The weird thing that next time I run it, it works flawlessly. But after reboot - here we go again! Maybe if I could make something the proggy save "stick", then...???
