    is it dead?(ihs...) IT'S ALIVE!

so.. after just having an epic battle with my 146 opteron IHS.. it now looks like this:...

now there is metal showing where the green used to be...
think it's still safe to try? or did I kill another one?

(..tried to use a screwdriver to get some leverage to finish popping it off *mummbles somethingorother about a certain video*)

time to get drunk in mourning..(just in case)

Ouch that looks kind of bad. I cut the substrate on mine a tiny bit and look how it clocks! Give it a shot and hope it works Best of luck!

Only way is to test it. I slightly chipped 2 resistors and was about to throw it in the bin lol (Venice 3200+) but my brother stopped me.

it should be fine what you see is the ground plane. assuming you didnt connect it to any traces under it it will boot up fine.

just give it a little clean up ...and chuck it back in. i think i'll work, it doesn't seem you damaged the core or resistors.

I had a 3000 venice (my first IHS removal) that I shaved off most of the little ic's and chipped the core and it oc'd like mad. The chip looked like a dog chewed on it. Go figure Just pop it in and see what it does you might be ok it doesnt look too bad.

I recommend not using a screwdriver in the future. Sorry about the CPU.

ALL u should EVER need for IHS removal is 2 hands, a peice of sponge foam, and a single sided razor blade, 1 side sharp, other side protected. If you cannot get it off with this, keep going slowly until you can get it off. Think of it as surgery, not cutting into a steak as fast as possible to wolf it down (althogh, it's quite tasty).

    it's alive!..
so.. I was browsing the forums on my sister's pos comp.. came across this thread.. after seeing ben805's phase change insulation method in his pics.. figured at this point... "hmm, worth a try":

guess maybe the waterblock was shorting out the resistors?..
or I just got really lucky..
could always blow up still I guess.. but at least I'm posting from it again..
now to get back to 3ghz and test it..

Awesome news!!!! When it booted up for the first time bet you were over the moon!!!

I genuinely felt regret and compasion hearing the first part about the CPU being dead, but least it's all back to normal

Pressing down on the insulation may have psudeo-reconnected one of the copper traces that had been cut?

    Thanks for all the replies.
just played some bf2 back at 3ghz.. all seems well with the cosmos there..

    but.. temps...
after some prime95 testing.. my temps are EXACTLY the same. . .(35c idle 51c load.. I think it's safe to say I got )

so.. now I'm kinda worrying about the electrical tape melting/catching on fire..(think I have been smelling something weird actually. . .)

Anyone know what temps electrical tape melts/spontaneously combusts at btw?

I agree completely with this if you do plan to remove a ihs... if your razorblade is more than a thumbnail thick.. don't even try it.. X-acto knife also = a big no.. I ended up using the metal peice from a floppy disk to do most of my "cutting" which also worked pretty well at cutting fingers... but yeah..
    NO screwdrivers...

although at this point.. after my results.. for some strange reason imo I'd have to say to anyone thinking about removing their's:
FOR THE LOVE OF "insertwhateveryouneedtohere" DON'T DO IT!

i used a blade from a disposible razor it was flimsy enought to bend as needed and weak enough not to break any caps off. worked great.

just checked still locked at 10x..

but people! electrical tape + 51c = safe??
made by 3m if that helps..
shorting out without turning on = fine.. if it shorts with the power on... I don't think it'll be fine

you should back that tape off the core. maybe take it back to the resistor row or maybe even just past the resistors so they can breath.
better yet, try covering just the one damaged corner with the elec. tape.
