I wouldnt say less than 2 feet, Though any height will work as long as you can get droplets.

I don't know the actual temp difference due to me never building my own bong cooler before. I most likely won't any time soon so maybe I should refrain from posting about it. I was merely restating what was stated by noob a couple times in the past. I was under the impression he had tried multiple types of bong coolers, not only working off of theory. Not to crap on all the shower head stuff, but I find that shower heads are a real PITA in bongs.
When I was bongin' I used a bunch of Scotch Brite Pads fastened together with wire (note to self: use something that doesn't rust next time) and twisted in a double-helix-esque formation up the length of the bong. Worked wonders with a wimpy little 92mm fan blowing over it and a falling distance of about 2 feet.![]()

Thats a bong, but if u filled it full of pads your turning it from a bong to a surface area. Its just different types. Direct die water is still water.
A bong the surface area is from falling. Surface area you get water to spread out. A mix is the best, and tahts what that would be.

I happen to have some "extra" irrigation pipe laying around, my question is, would say 2 feet of 10 inch pipe as the res, and 4 feet of 8 inch pipe used as the riser for the showerhead be overkill? Or would it be so oversized that it would not work? My math says the res would hold about 9 gallons of water.![]()
I was gonna use the Swifty 655, but it pumps out 40 dbl of noise, and I'm trying to get quieter, not louder. Is there a pump that performs as well, but without the noise? Or a $200 price tag?
Pump head is measured from the pump up right? So a pump thats rated at 10 feet of head will pump up 10 feet, how high will it pull the water? I guess what I'm asking is, can you use a 10 foot head pump in the middle of a 20 foot line? Or turn it down to lessen the noise, and run it in the middle of a 6 foot line?

With the size of your reservoir, I would probably recommend a Mag3 submerged in the res. It has about 13' of head and is very quiet. Being submerged it will dump some heat into the water but in your case this will be next to nothing compared to the amount of cooling you can get. The over sizing of the pipe will work (you can even look for some of those cool looking 7” shower heads. The only thing that I don't see is how you will set up your fan but that does not mean that you don't have a plan. Do they even sell 8” wyes?
As to loop length: I have run a 10’ of head pump to push water down 30’ of tubing with no problem but the tubing was just about horizontal and there were no water blocks.Cathar or MaxxxRacer may be able to give you the actual numbers but there is more to how much loop you can use with a given pump than just length. Things to consider: Vertical rise, restriction of water blocks, bends (90 degree bends really hurt head), and transitions (tube to barb, etc). All of these things will cut down on the effectiveness of a pump. It all depends on your given loop. The standard line is, “Your mileage may vary.” Just try to keep your loop as short and ‘clean’ as possible.
Pulling: Most, if not all, pumps that you will find for water cooling are ‘push’ type pumps. Meaning that they will not pull water to any usable degree and if you try to use them to pull you will probably end up just damaging the pump.
Ok so now that I have just typed my fingers to the bone, I just hope that some of this is informative. Have fun with this project and let us all know how it works out.
