HTT woes on Neo2 in preparation for Opteron...

So here I've been chugging away with a Winchester 3200+ all this time, on my Neo2 Plat. It's a rubbish chip, at its peak it only did about 2.35GHz prime stable and I started getting instability with it so just whacked it back down to stock. Anyway...

My main problem with overclocking this CPU (apart from it going nowhere in particular) was the max HTT I could get out of the system. It maxed out at 275, 1:1 (I have GSkill LE) or with any divider you care to mention - memtest just wouldn't run stably at anything above 275. I know the RAM's good for way over that, so that leaves the CPU or the board. Which is it likely to be? I ask now because I've got a 144 coming, and with 9x and only 275MHz HTT to work with I won't be a happy bunny overclocking it if I'm limited to less than 2.5GHz.

So what kind of HTT do Neo2s usually max out at? Or is it definitely the Winchester's fault that I was so limited, and it should be fine with the Opteron? And what mods (if any) can I do to the Neo2 if it turns out to be its fault? Any advice would be appreciated.

EDIT - Oh, I'm using 1.36b (or maybe 1.37b, it's the one where you can set the NB fan to be temperature-controlled in the BIOS) - any other BIOS suggestions would be appreciated, though I'd really need it to have this function.

yow, on that thread you wanna click on sideeffects link in his sig, go grab a new bios. the last time we have temp controlled fans for NB in bios was 1.8 version, so you do need to go up to that at least. when i got my opterown i left the 1.8 bios cuz after that is when revE processor support was built in. im currently on 1.c and i have my nb fan controlled by speedfan. trust me, it took me a week to wrap my head around it, but its better. 1. it boots full speed, 2 it ramps better cuz i know when your nb fan ramps, it does it in slow long steps... 5 seconds full speed, then all of a sudden 75% then anotther few seconds etccc.

so try it out. speedfan is a good program, and i have it set my nb to 45% speed and its silent. oh and it would ramp it to max about 65% when im gaming and my htt is up at 290x10 right now.

oh and ps: my neo2 went up to 360htt before i stopped checking it. get the new bioses mane

I used Speedfan before I got this BIOS, it's just a hassle IMO. Not adverse to trying it if the newer BIOSes will really help, though...at the moment the biggest problem I've run up against is not having 1T/2T control. I think I'm gonna try NFM's 1.36b mod for SD cores to get 1T back, and see how it does for me HTT-wise - currently the position I'm in is that I can nearly get into Windows at 320x9 or so, but the memory is being really weird - memtest is fine at 300 sync, at 320 with 166 or 133 (all 3-4-4), but Windows BSODs in all cases. I know this memory will do at least 275 2.5-3-3 1T as that's where I had it with my Winchester, so what's going on now I've no idea. Grr.

Last time i tried, i got to 330 HTT on my Neo2.

I really don't even need that high, so i never bothered trying higher.

hey man, trust me, try the new bioses, you will love the design of them, you will appreciate the control, and all you lose is the ability to change the speed of the nb fan.

here, check it out, screenshots and all, no need for funny key combinations man. its a whole new world!@!!!!!@!@!@!@!

Doesn't have 1T forced on it, which is what I really need atm along with everything else, but I may as well give it a go to see if it helps my HTT along

Right...doesn't look like I'm getting anywhere with this BIOS. 300x9 is fine, Prime stable etc...but 320x8 even with 133 divider crashes Windows. Gonna try a different BIOS now, see if it gives me more HTT...

EDIT - same results with 1.8 1T modded. Suppose I'll have to try this 1.C thing and forget about command rate for a while...

EDIT 2 - that 1.C TCCD BIOS is a pile of wank, at least for me - even worse results than before. 300x9, same settings as was 100% stable before gave me instant BSODs, had to back it way way way down to get it remotely stable to reflash. Back on 1.3b6 1T mod now, 300x9 seems to be my lot until I get a new board (and therefore new graphics card...sigh)

My neo can do about 380htt ish, I have 2 differnce 1 gig kits of ocz tccd rev2 and now pc4800s, both couldnt get 275+ htt stable no mater the timings or volts, this board cant push ram that high.

My experiences with this board and RAM are identical - however I just can't get any async HTT out of it either. I'm sure it's not something I'm doing majorly wrong, but here's an A64 tweaker shot just in case...this is at 300x9 with 166 divider (so the GSkill LE is running at 2.5-3-3-10 1T 250MHz).

it's the board many people have told me this, including OCZRyder, I now believe it ever since i got my pc4800 and they run rated specs.

Also maybe off topic, something seems to be dieing lately, I haven't touched the bios and my ram is no longer stable I run 306*9.5 ram at 290 2t 2.5-3-3-7 Prime is still 8hours + stable but windows memtest won't past 50% sometimes, also i noticed this because cs:s started crashing, I've had some issues with this board and bios anomilies in the past, including random ascii charaters all over the screen in different colors.

    Hey Kameleon,

have u tried playing with Max Async Latency and Read-Preamble in A64 Tweaker? Boot up at a speed you know you are stable, then increase you HTT speed to 310 (using Clockger, u want 320 stable right?), then change Max Async Latency to 9ns and Read Preamble to 7ns. Hopefully this wont lock up; then raise your HTT to 320. I remember this board being finicky running a mem divider at high HTT speeds.
