so far i've found if i get a game locking up after a while, just stopping and either dropping to desktop with screwed colours or crashing on one image and needing reseting that its not enough voltage being used. if theres either type of artifacts your mem/gpu is probo pushed too far, poss not enough volts or too many or too hot. but plan crashing without artifacts i go back push voltage up a little more and clocks get stable. you should try at 1.3v and see if 625/650 becomes stable without lockups.

If i raise my volts to 1.3 i almost get a instant lockup No 1.3 for me . I hope a new bios will fix it.

From this pic it's clear that is a heatsink with fins.. I think the GTX trick will work just fine.

whaaaaa! I Think I killed my computer. I was testing my 80mm fan with the fan controler when my hand hit a screw. The screw fell onto the motherboard near the bottom where some small chips are right by the last PCI slot. Then, lights on my motherboard, FAN LED's, and indicator lights on case began to flicker and computer turned off. I tried turing it back on, but lights just flickered and computer turned off. I then unplugged the computer, pressed the power switch to clear any electricity left. I plugged it back in and cleared the CMOS. Then I tried turning it on regulary and luckily everything did turn on. But, no signal was being sent to the monitor. And the red RAM LED on the motherboard was on. I tried switching memory slots, putting in a spare stick I had, same thing, red LED and no signal to monitor. I should mention the video card was NOT in the computer when the screw fell into motherboard so I know my x1800 xl is ok. I do not hear a POST beep. Could the CPU been fried? The mems are fine since the same thing happens with a spare stick

btw, i got cover off. it IS NOT possible to stick screws into the x1800 heatsink cause there are no fins. The top of the heatsink is solid. The cooling is a type of exhaust system. Air blows through the heatsink and out the back end of the card.

man im sorry to hear about your system. I have no clue what it could be except maybe you shorted a trace that is no longer working as should. The mobo may be acting as it is as a safety thing.

Glad to hear your X1800 is still ok and thanks for the info on the fan not attaching to the heatsink. Makes me feel more confortable about my Zalman Fatality purchase today. Please keep us posted on the results of your system.

its strange cause everything else works, fans, hard drive, lights etc. Its as if the vga cable is not connected even though it is. and what would make the RAM status LED turn on red?

Its the motherboard. Thats why there are no beeps, but you will get power through it to the fans, etc.

Sorry to hear that - as for the fan, if you cannot screw it on you can use wire ties to secure it to the cooler. A bunch of people in the GTX thread did that not wanting to scratch up the stock heatsink...

guess so. ill rma it and get something else.

Is it a good idea to put the fan on the flat heatsink? There is no place for the air to go but up. Imagine putting a case fan on a flat desk, the air will just hit the desk and travel back up through the fan. Know what I mean?

I use glue gun when i cant screw things.
It holds good and comes off easy without leaving a trace.

Well I just took the plunge. Ordered myself a Retail BBATI X1800XL with the Zalman FS-V7 Fatality cooler. I really, really hope I can meet what you guys are doing. 625/700 with 1.225/1.90. If not im going to be very sad as this card after shipping and taxes was quite expensive out here in Canada.
