New Nvidia drivers exploits dual core technology!

Wow, it looks like Nvidia may have pulled it off. I was surprised by the gains made by these new drivers, especially in Doom III 0_0!

The review was done using the 4800+ from AMD, and a 7800GTX.

    BTW, review is in german.

I'm sure ATI may come up with drivers of their own that exploit dual core to some degree..

There was some talk about multithreaded games blunting the impact of these multithreaded drivers though..

Oh well, we'll just have to wait and see. Games that use alot of vertex processing (like Doom III shadows) seem to benefit from these drivers the most.

Well first off Dual Core CPUs have little more bugs in them then I would like to have. So I think I'll stick with single core FX-57 that I'm going to be getting soon. There fast enough, and there is no reason to use dual core unless under heavey loads with rendering, but even then who wants to render a movie or photoshop while playing Counter-Strike: Source or Battlefeild 2?

Anyways nice find though, and I guess it's good to know that someone is useing the dual core, so when it is needed they will have everything worked out.

almost every .90 amd cpu has cold bug they cant boot @ at really low sub zero temps but that affects single and dual cores that is the only bug....

btw carfax if you can read that or writte the guys of that website tell them to try higher resolution with the candy eye ON to see if the drivers helps a lot or notwith sli 7800gtx runing low res is stupid imo

I don't speak German. However, they weren't using the 7800GTX in SLI. It was a single card.

Also, the 1280x1024 bench was done in high quality mode with 4xAA, so it wasn't exactly low res.

The one thing I wish they would have done, is to use a 4000+ for comparison.

well if it is just 1 is ok... pretty nice fps you can gain with that driver for dual core and you are right a 4000 would be better in the comparission

Why are all the high quality settings so much lower in terms of peformance on the SMP drivers?

EDIT: Wow.... that is a heck of a jump for in-game-scenerios

^^ Is that right? Because that is almost as much as it would normally get in SLI I really hope that ATi can come up with a similar technology as soon as possible

Bugs in dual core huh? I believe you have been misinformed, the chips are working remarkably well. Unless you have some data?

I think the reason why Doom III gets such a large boost with these drivers is because it uses so much vertex processing; mainly for shadows.

Thats part of how these drivers increase performance; by offloading vertex processing to the second cpu core so that it can be executed in parallel with the GPU.

Nice gains in some places, but the performance bug under "quality" mode is annoying...

Looking good for the future. Multi-threaded drivers + multi-threaded games means quad-core CPUs will offer immediate gains for gaming.

the performance bug is only in the 3dmarks though..in everything else it looks to be fine.

Well, from what I've heard, the multithreaded drivers will not work as well with multithreaded games because with multithreaded games, the second core will be in use by the game itself and not just be idling; therefore less processing power will be free to help the GPU with vertex processing.

**EDIT** Whoops, I just realized you said "quad-core" and not dual core. Yeah, with quad core, more stuff can be offloaded to the CPUs by the drivers, along with the regular multithreaded game optimizations

I doubt quad core will be available to gamers until late 2007 or early to mid 2008 though.

Quad core opties will be the first quad core processors, and they will be hella expensive!

well yeah but that's with dual cores. I was talking about quad cores in the second part of my post. With quad cores you've got two CPUs working both threads from the driver, and the other two working both threads from the game, so nothing's really getting cluttered with too much work.

Yeah, it is a long wait, but it's still pretty exciting. I mean usually when you add more cores they aren't utilized until much later, but now with drivers and games both being dual-threaded, future CPUs will probably have immediate benefits to offer gamers.
