fyi - just got my crucial ballistix from newegg and first boot-up, I'm 250 at 2.5-3-3-7. I'll do more testing and provide screenshots. I can't believe these puppies were only $310.

Question - I noticed in the database that some of the ballistix are listed as Z503. Mine are also. What is the difference between these and the non Z503? Thx

L503 are Ballistix Tracers (the ones with the LEDs), the Z503 are Ballistix (the ones without the LEDs).

Not really sure if theres any difference in PCBs or ram chips, as both seem to perform exceptionally.

    Question

    Hi, guys!

Just ordered a pair of Z503 from a Cruicial reseller, it costed me 400 USD + VAT + shipping, is this a normal price? Seemed a bit inflated to me, but had no options.

And the most important - has anyone tried those on ASUS P4C800-E ???

I need 282 FSB to max my CPU out - is that possible in theory?

Of course I know that the pieces of the same hardware vary, not this is my question, but rather another thing bothers me:
As I have seen in this thread, some sticks are capable of reaching the speeds I lust for, but... after an extensive BIOS tweaking, well... in P4C800-E's BIOS there're only the basic tCAS, tRAS, tRCD and tRP, thus do you guys think I'd be able to achieve the 282MHz 1:1 if let's say the sticks are capable of doing so on the DFI LP UT ?

    Thanks in advance!

Thanks for the suggestion, mate, I ordered through the reseller only because of the "moneyback" option which could help finding the suitable sticks. And though, I didn't think of the option you have offered, I don't want to bother anyone with all the RMA I'm most probably going to come through, pursuing my purpose.

Just curious, how do you get them so cheap if Crucial sells them for 399.99 USD ?

    Exclamation Best 2x1GB for Dothan

Hey guys. Thanks for making this thread. It is a wealth of knowledge and helps to keep people from wasting money on poor quality products. I am building a Dothan system and must have 2x1GB. From reading up on the subject here at XS I see that low latency is very important for the Dothan. Looking at the database Crucial, Corsair, Mushkin, and Patriot all can hit cl2.5 around 250fsb. How do I decide? There are so many choices. I will probably only need 240fsb. Will any of the sticks run cl2 from 225fsb til 240fsb? Also I see that TwinMos maker of the new BH-5 style chips also offers a 2x1GB kit. I have not seen anybody use this memory yet. Help me decide please.

Not a lot of people are testing their 1gig sticks at CAS 2, but it seems like the Infineon based ICs are the your best bet for 1gig sticks with tight timings. I don't think anyone has hit CAS 2 240 2x1gig though. Plenty doing 240+ with 4x512mb though.

I see the TwinMos 1 gig sticks listed on their site, but I don't see a product number. Do you know a retailer selling these sticks? Long odds on those sticks being anything special, since other boutique memory makers serving the enthusiasts market have spent a lot of time exploring their IC options on 1gig sticks and now are well into the marketing and binning process. I sure people would welcome another positive surprise from Twinmos.

I have got my Z503 today and I couldn't run it stable even @ FSB 260.
I remind those of you, who are too lazy to read above (or below ), that I run the P4 2.4C on the ASUS P4C800-E DLX mobo.

I tried the most of the BIOS settings combinations, I could get FSB 265 MemTest stability, but Windows hanged even at FSB 260.

I tried to swap the sticks, tried to change the Dual Channel pairs of slots, nothing really helped to be MemTest stable.

The interesting thing is, that each of two sticks was MemTest stable at FSB 282 - my desired frequency, but since this doesn't really help me, I didn't even tried to load Windows with one stick .

If the miracle will happen and someone will tell me that he was able to get at least FSB 275 stable with the memory and the motherboard as I have, I'll RMA my kit and I'll ask for another one, to try my luck once again.
But most likely, I'm going to ask my friend with DFI LanParty nF4 (like the most of the guys with good OC results have) to test this RAM's theoretical OC'ability and if it does well, I'll leave the RAM and upgrade to DFI LanParty, well... if it doesn't OC well at all I'll RMA and try another Z503 kit.
If nothing goes well I'll just return the Crucials and get some cheaper PQI PC3200 2GB to run 3:2.

Feel welcome to advise me something wise to do in my situation.

Yeah I was thinking the corsair xms2048cl2 kit would be best for me. The crucial sure is looking good though. I have 4 x512 ballistix now. Cl2 may not be possible yet with 1 gig sticks. Here is twinmos ebuy site. They want like $380 for their 2gb x 1 kit. http://www.twinmos.com.sg/ebuy/prodV...p?idproduct=57

I've just started playing with my new Ballistix Z503, got 4 of them and they tested as follows at 2.9v, Tref of 2560, in dimm 3 single channel:

    Stick 1= 298mhz
    Stick 2= 308mhz
    Stick 3= 312mhz
    Stick 4= 304mhz

Is it possible that the low max voltage is the issue on my mobo?
I tried the memories at max 2.85v - the mobo limit, but I can try DDR Booster, I got handy.
What do you guys say? Or it just doesn't worth the check, if the memory can't do 260MHz stable with 2.85v?

Has anyone got any idea - is it possible to HEX modify theP4C800-E's BIOS image, to set the lower level DRAM settings, which are not available for editing through the BIOS menu, to the values you guys recommend like "Tref of 2560" [Major] etc. ?

Or maybe these settings aren't in the BIOS at all, but are just implemented in the memory controller as constants ?

Damn, I'd like to run this RAM on my current mobo since the upgrade to DFI will lead to the graphics adapter upgrade also, and this is too expensive for me to the moment...

By now, I'm going to pick up 4 sticks of some cheap PQI for a test in the local store.

    ---

OK, I'm back with 4x1GB sticks of PQI, going offline for the tests...
Sorry for previously desinforming those who had read this post before I edited it, about CAS2 PQI.
Last edited by MoToR; 09-14-2005 at 03:02 AM. Reason: Posted the incorrect information about PQI CAS2 1GB modules previously... The local store forgot to mention "Dual Channel" on its site and I didn't verify at PQI's site :)

I believe that all advanced settings on that board are automatically determined internally, and there is no way that I know of to expose or manipulate those values.
