...
I know I'm nit picky about this stuff, I've heard it before.
Don't take any offense, this isn't really a rant, eh I guess it is, what I mean is, I'm not like b!tching.
I've dealt with it for years, and this is pretty much how I feel.

Ntfs security is a complete joke and it's a waste of time for both the user and the machine it runs on.
It doesn't prevent a knowledgeable hacker from doing a darned thing, it slows down the user of the machine having to deal with it.

Each admin has a diff user id per machine, per domain.
However local and network services are always get the same user ids.
Meaning I can boot off winpe logged in as a local service and get total access to the storage.

Prob is for me, I don't log into my installed windows like that, because there are issues running as system that I never got around to fixing.
Works just fine to recover and stuff, but as a gaming machine it's just not good, I forget the issues now but...

And it's not just security, which is completely lacking.
I argue it's not about security at all, it's just there to annoy the user, it's about speed and usability.

One thing I used to have to do, and I don't anymore... since I don't use ntfs anymore except for the windows os partitions.
I used to have to re-apply my user rights to the filesystem I did a fresh install.
To every file, to every folder, and every partition.
1st I had to take ownership, then re-open the security dialog... and apply full access (in a specific way...).
And this took valuable time after a fresh install that had to be done tediously (an annoying routine).

That was the usability part.
Speed part, well, windows checks those users rights every time it accesses those files, when I don't give a flying hoot about it what it thinks I should or should not have access to.
It's a waste of cpu/drive time and space, putting more wear and tear on my hardware.
And annoying me to no end lol .

To me, anyone with half a brain could access this data regardless.
So why bother with it to begin with, other then to annoy the user like microsoft seems to love doing...

It doesn't swap data, it doesn't encrypt it, so why it bothers to do so is just to annoy and for those avg users that use that nasty ms networking protocol (which has it's own security issues, it's essentially a front door for hackers).
