Most likely performance is overestimated (which happens with nearly every GPU launch these days it seems).
Why? Don't forget, all Nvidia cards this generation are quite overpriced compared to their predecessors. The GTX590 carried an MSRP of $699. $999 is a hefty $300 more. I wouldn't say it is impossible. But the same money for a single GPU card is utterly insane - even for Nvidia. And 6GB just makes the card more power hungry and expensive, and for what?
