I'm pretty sure if you want to mod the res, you can make it truly redundant without check valves and such. all you'd need to do is run a line on the inside of the res, from either of the ports flowing water in to the res, to the inlet of one of the pumps, then on the back of the pump, run the outlet port to the other res input. Then the pumps are in series, and only one will pull coolant from the res.

That is if internally, you can put a barb on the pump inlet hole.

Unless I've mis-understood you, I don't think that won't give you the effect you want with a shared res feeding the pumps...

EDIT: It looks like I've mi-understood - are you suggesting tubing inside of the resevoir to give a direct feed from one external inlet to one of the pump internal inlets thus bypassing the shared res for one of the pumps? Are they threaded on the inside? is there clearance?
