Because if Nvidia only removed XFX from their preffered partner list then we wil stil see Nvidia products from XFX.
Nvidia removing a company from their preffered partner list only means that they wont get any special treatment.

Nvidia did the same to Asus and MSI when they started selling ATI.
Preffered partners get get better treatment, at launch they get more GPUs etc.
The article says what you're saying, but in addition to no longer receiving better treatment, they won't be able to sell cards in Europe too. It's a rumor, of course.
