Better keep your OS clean. It can live for years unless you abuse it.
Registry bloat, files that get buried deep within the OS that can never get removed, etc...Yes it can live for years, but performance will slowly degrade. The difference between a New install, and a 1 year old install, running the same programs is quite amazing at times
