massman, CPU can't do much alone since it needs a chipset and memory to work so the performance is a sum of these three components. Right now the best these two companies can offer:

AMD = Phenom (K10 architecture) + AMD 790 FX + DDR2
Intel = Yorkfield (Penryn) + Intel X38 + DDR3
