Picked up a VF1000 and extra memory cooler kit (you'll need that) for my 8800GT pictures and results as follows:
Notes: Idle temp is 30min in Windows Desktop | Load is 30min playing Crysis
eVGA Superclocked - 650mhz Core | 1900mhz Mem

Fan set to auto (never touched it)
Idle: 62c
Load: 93c
VF1000
Fan set to 1/2 way using Fan Mate 2
Idle: 40c
Load: 60c
