The difference between the pT chart of CO2 and ethylene is pretty big. I don't think a 1/2 hp compressor can pull it. Check the pT chart of ethylene

    count me in

compressor: 1/5 hp techumseh (i'm pretty sure it's 1/5 hp, it came from a large fridge/ freezer)
    refrigerants: r290/ CO2

Don't bother using anything less than 1/2hp, I tried 1/4hp and there isint eneough power to condense the CO2 while under any load, it jneeds a larger compressor. Just trying to save you hours and hours of tinkering and frustration.

gkiing, if I remember correctly, you did use a capillary tube for HX. I'm sure
you know that this metering device is very restrictive :P: Any mechanical
expansion valves (PEV, TXV etc.) should let autocascade to working properly
    with 1/4 HP compressor

it is as restrictive as you make it. It's purpose is to be restrictive I doubt if you can get an autocascade working efficient with a 1/4HP compressor.

I was doubting if autocascade with 1/4 HP compressor and TXV/PEV on HX can condense CO2 at load

1/4 isint eneough, even with a txv. On my autocascade v2 (not posted here) i tried a new condenser and hx, and even with a larger hx and more surface area (used corrugated copper pipe) it couldnt hold a load. I think at least 1/2hp is needed to maintain -30 on the hx under load.

With new autocascade designs shouldn't at least a pressure releif valve be mandatory. make everyone buy one then they will always have them to use. That way no one will split something open. I can still picture that one guys seperator that was distorted. It was a few psi away from splitting. Should find that pic and post it to remind people what pressure can do. "work safe" Walt
