    Question 6200 -> 6600/GT Mod?

    http://www.xtremesystems.org/modules...rder=0&thold=0

Anyone tried this? Any luck? Feel the gains are worth it? Does this change anyone's mind on the 6200 series?

This is what I got from UNWINDER himself:

"This applies _only_ to early 6200s based upon the same NV43 as 6600. 6200TC use different GPU (NV44), which cannot be modded."

Certainly there'd be no point on doing this on the PCIe "TurboCache" chips anyway, since they don't have the memory bandwidth to begin with (they rely on main memory bandwidth via PCIe 16x) . . .

But thanks for the heads up!

Anybody tried this with the NV43?

theres an article about this on gzeasy i think, their card was based on the nv43 iirc and it could be modded into a 6600. the memory clock is the problem though, the 6600 is a 6800 with half the pipes, the ain architecture is identical, and just like the 6800 the 6600 is very bandwidth hungry. cutting the memory bus to 128bit was def made so the 6600 dont perform too well, a 6600 with 256bit bus would most likely perform almost as well as a 6800gt!

several people tested procentual gains by ocing ram and gpu and the result was that ocing the ram results in 2x the performnece gain a higher gpu clock gave them. those cards are mostly limited by their memory bandwidth... id rather pay 100$ more and get a card with 1.6ns gddr3 that does 1.3ghz+ wich makes the card perform almost like a 6800gt.

all, the 6200 and the 6600 and 6600gt are great price/performence cards... what card you should pick really depends what performence you are looking for

So would I - but, maybe the 6200 mod adds a little life to the budget section . . .

well just to screw around and waste money, i bought the chaintech 256mb agp version from zzf today. The position of the memory and the way everything looks on this card reminds me of a 6600. I'll see if it softmods.

so far i've only seen a couple agp's available. evga 6200 from circuit city(don't hold me to this one), aopen from newegg, and the chaintech from zzf.

If i'm right does the mod only work on the agp versions?
Can i do it on a pcie 6200 with no tc?

I'm honestly not sure if there are PCIe versions without TurboCache - but, if you find out, and if they're moddable, let us know!

Alex, keep us posted on your experiment!

i believe it has to have an nv43 chip to be able to mod.

someone here in the forums posted that their gigabyte pci-e was able to mod into the 8 pipes

The link is to the Gigabyte PCIe card, which has 128MB local memory - like Alex pointed out, it should be moddable.

    here's a little update...

received my card today from fedex on a saturday which is quite odd.

upon opening the box, it only comes with s-video adapter, manual, cd, and card. did not come with dvi adapter.

    this is a chaintech 6200 with 256mb.

the memory is vdata. i cannot tell what the gpu is..nv43?..nv44?...i cannot tell from just looking at it. its a week 0440 from tawain.

anyways installed forceware 71.40, earlier drivers will not detect the card.

rivatuner 15.3 new years edition does not allow to open the extra pipes, so i had to revert back to version 15.1 since i could not find 15.2. With 15.1 i was able to open the extra 4 pipes.

well after restarting, i would get a screen corruption before the windows loading sign would come up. So i put back my ati card and it booted and loaded windows just fine. So i uninstalled the rivatuner, put back the 6200 and it loaded windows just fine. So I reinstalled rivatuner again, tried opening up the extra pipes then rebooted. Once again another screen corruption.

so it looks like my attempt to unlock the extra pipelines was unsuccessful

things that i've noticed between the successful mods..
contained samsung chips, gpu was made in korea, contained 128mb.

    ok well after further investigations...

i just happend to find rivatuner 15.2 which seems to have done the trick, also in my bios i opend the aperture to 256mb.

after running 3dmark01 i picked up an extra 1k. didnt have any artifacting or tearing.

    time to overclock now!

    edit:
after all said and done, something was really awkward with this card, with 4 pipes available, i got a better score in 3dmarks01se than with 8pipes modded.

well overclocking turned out to be a bummer, only able to achieve 475/560, which received 16k in 3dmarks01se doesnt really seem to outperform a $100 9700pro.

doesnt seem to justify keeping this card, will most likely return the card and eat the restocking fee.

Did you have already overclocked that card? Very strange that you've got more points than with 8 pipes ...

As far as I know AGP version of this card wouldn't softmod even if RivaTuner shows it had.
Only PCIe version of 6200 can easyly be moded to 6600. Although AGP version is based on the same NV43 it didn't mod succesfully. There has also been problems with o/c- on AGP it is not possible to reach something above 480 core maybe it's an unvolt issue but we won't have a confirmation of it.
all the news from owners confirm that sad information, so we could only buy an PCIe version which oc magnificent

same thing happened to me, I got an asus pci-e 128 local mem 6200, I scored 12,500 in 3dmark2001 and then I opened the extra pipes (with the new years edition, it seemed to work ok for me?) and I got 12,100????

    I was able to O/C to 525/620 for 14,500 on a stock A64-3000+

wonder what is going on? the 8 light test seemed waaaaaaay faster with 8 pipes, but my score was lower.

I got a eVGA 6200 with 550 MHz ram and this thing runs like a beast on steroids! I unlocked the additional pipes and got to overclock a bit, here are my results:

That's my max stable artifact free overclock, I'd wager to say I could go a little bit further, but this is about it. Simply a great value card!

    Sweet Ackbar!
In short, both AMD and NVIDIA discovered that their next-generation graphics cards are superior to each others' last-generation graphics cards.

the 15.1 drivers prolly opened your pipes and your 15.2 only said that it did. That would explain the scores+artifacts
