    GPUGrid close to using AMD

We are practically ready with the app alone. We have to test it on the context of boinc now.

First thing to do is to update the server to a more recent version, then wait for problems. Our server software is quite old and there could be problems which would only appear in a couple of weeks. I don't want to test AMD with the old server as no opencl was there then.

In the meanwhile we will do our tests locally on a private new server.

An other thing to say that it will be windows only for the first several months.

We have tested on one OS (XP32) and one card (H55850). So expect few issues. Hopefully, it all works and we can start submitting real workunits for amd. In such case they will be on a different app, not to affect the work on nvidia card, but the porting of the code is complete, so they will be of the same usefulness of nvidia wus.

Looks like they are still shaking out the final details but they have had success and are moving towards a release

no release date yet but some more details ...

OpenCL 1.1 and single precision (no need run only DP cards, same as NV)
H5000, H6000 and the new H7000 cards should work.
    GPU load ~85%

Sweet! Keep us updated! Like to see the points these things can do.

Once the kinks get worked out I'll be choosing (yet another) card... or two.

Rough estimate for alpha testing is maybe mext month.

I don't know how long it will take for GPUGrid to go from alpha to beta but I have seen this crew move relatively quick once they have proofed an approach. I'm going to guess we see a beta app in the November/December timeframe that we will be able to participate in. An upshot to participating in beta is that they usually use real WUs and not just "make" work.

I just checked over at GPUGrid and there is no new news on this topic from the project team ... we just have to be patient.

Yeah they haven't started an open beta yet... I've talked to them about getting an open beta specifically for XS saying we'd help them step by step debugging, but they weren't ready for that step yet as of last time I talked to them.

I don't think we'll be seeing many errors off of it, just might have trouble getting the max performance and/or getting it running.

They won't release it until they have a stable client. And actually iirc they have a stable client, it just does not perform to a level that they are willing to release.

just updated my Catalyst drivers to 11.10 and discovered that the FireStream 9370s aren't supported by the Catalyst Pro Suite. *sigh*

can't wait for something that actually uses these cards

So what does that mean for your cards? Couldn't you download different drivers that work for BOINC and crunch some of those projects?

i've tried a couple of variations, Otis, and I'm actually working with my AMD FAE on a project similar to this (not a CFD thing; more mundane than that) so, I'll be doing some parallel investigative work that may help out.

They do this quite regularly. It will come when it comes but after getting to know how they work I would not expect it to happen all that soon. They are very good about getting out enough real work to keep all the users productive, but it tends to take time for them to get out updates for new hardware (which also relates to getting out a new client for AMD).

My honest guess? We'll see new cards before we see a client. I hope to be proven wrong, but I just don't see it.

Agreed, but I also think it's better to fully utilize the current member base and slowly expand than expand at the cost of the current base.

    Limited resources.

Completely ... Don't let the forums being quiet over there make you think they are not busier than beevers (Otis ... you're good with the images grab something for that would you please ... (preferably rated PG13 and not R ... wait ... I've seen PG's posts ... what the heck am I inviting here) ... too much time and coffee ... stream of un-conciousness :-)

back on topic ...Keep in mind that their primary focus, as a university, is to publish findings (which they do quite regularly), make presentations at conferences (which again, they do regulary), obtaining funds (sometimes they need to get their own grants, the Uni does not pay for it all), finally upgrades to the app software and in last place I beieve is the website itself. Now I could be wrong about the order of things but they are actually quite a prolific groups doing some great work. Last I read on this was posted not long ago that they are trying to finish up the AMD app before a building a new CUDA version (new CUDA version originally slated for fall this year but have since moved it to early next year to make room for AMD app dev). That does not mean that they will release the AMD vesion, just that they want to get to the end of the devlopment cycle with it to see if it is truely worth processing their experiments with.
