    Setting on Android phone

I have an Android phone (nothing modified yet). My settings are set to checked to notify me of new emails, but yet it notifies me 15 minutes later that I received new email. If I were to install a modified ROM on my phone would I be able to change the setting so that it can notify me immediately when I receive new emails?

To answer your question : No, it wouldn't change anything.

On another hand, is your mail box exchange compatible ? Cause it's the only way to have push mail (= being notified immediately) If not, then it's normal to be notified at regular intervals (depending on poll timing)
Sorry for my bad english, I'm trying to improve it

+1 to the above. Unless your mail type supports push, you'll be noticed once it checks for email.

for better battery life (not sure how much better), set it to a higher number, or lower if you want to be more up to date.

Alpha, what do you mean by unless my mail type supports push? I have my gmail account(s) linked up to my Droid phone.

Both yahoo and gmail apps notify me right away when I get new mail. Only setting I can come up with is the Background data checked to receive data any/all the time.

Have you made sure your gmail account is set to sync? It's under menu>settings>accounts&sync

+1 for what has been said. On my LG Optimus V, gmail accounts are synced and I get nearly immediate email updates.

Make sure your accounts are syncing. If you're on Android OS ver. 2.2, then tap and hold on any open space, then when the Add screen pops up, click widgets and scroll to find the "Power Control." That'll be placed on one of the home screens (you don't have to keep it), but there should be a button (of the five) that looks like the recycling symbol. That will be green if your accounts are set to sync. If it's gray, then you need to turn syncing on.
