Big thanks to the Gigabyte team, I spent many hours trying to find the cause of this and I'm sure others have as well!

    Gigabyte rocks as always!
weird does it not show up in the device manager as an unknown device?

got a refund for my UD4 yesterday at MC and bought a Asus Deluxe. I'm liking it much better. (although to be fair, the Pro should be compared to the UD4 but they didn't have it in stock) Bios has much more features. (like VRM frequencies, advanced phase controls) finer CPU voltage tuning too (the UD4 seemed to only make "large" jumps in Vcore and not fine tuned) and the POST LED is a no brainer, as well as Power/Reset buttons and CMOS reset button. not to mention intel LAN. oh, and the Asus software seems much more polished than gigabytes...

I think gigabyte really dropped the ball this time around it's a shame because I don't like Asus at all but I can't ignore a good product.

looking forward to seeing peoples results on the newer B3's though good luck

Nope, all appears in order until you go to play with Easytune. Glad the guys @ GIGABYTE were able to figure it out quickly, I spent a several hours a day for 23 days trying different OS, updates, methods, ect and couldn't figure it out.

not really... my 5660mhz chip can't run x56 on ud4 b3. The 5.66GHz result was on M4E but doesn't matter. Will test it more but the board is bad for now. I didn't have ud4 b2 so I can't compare those two.

you have 3 dimm on ud4?

retry 56x with only 2 dimm slot 2 and 4

Which is your max frequency on UD4 B3 with the same chip which on M4E reached 5660?

    So...
Maybe the conclusion that the max frequency depends of the cpu and not of the mobo is just a myth???
    Just wonder...

    It's not a myth.
You shouldn't see more than a 100 mhz difference between most of the higher end boards, and, of course, the BIOS matters too. The BIGGEST factor in how fast the cpu's will go is in the CPU itself.

The difference between boards is the VRM's, which handle power and loads to the cpu. One board may get you slightly lower voltages or slightly higher speeds than another, in that regard. For instance, one user was able to decrease voltage by 0.01v by switching from P8p deluxe to Maximus 4 extreme. That's a small but still noticable boost.

The chipset is still the same, so it's not like you're trying to compare a P45 vs an X48 or 780i. The IMC, which used to be the northbridge, was a critical factor in how far you could push the cpu's before the core i7, although some CPU's had weird FSB walls. With the IMC on the chip itself, the board is mainly responsible for handling the I/O and delivering stable voltages and amps, while the overclock potential mostly resides in the cpu itself.

BIOS can also play a part, although I have no idea how. I remember in a UD7 BIOS, one beta bios made people have to raise their voltages to get stability (same clocks weren't stable as on the previous bios), BUT they got higher 3dmark scores with the new bios. So what was going on there? Who knows...you literally would have to have a bios coder participating on this forum to know what is being changed, when something like that happens.

Now there IS a difference in using a $250 board and a $100 board (not even sure if you can buy a $100 board). The $100 board's VRM's are a lot cheaper, with far fewer phases, and thus the voltages will not be as strong/stable, and that can limit overclocking.

Don't want to say anything about that for now becuse i've to test it better. On M4E the 5660mhz was 20mins of job. Simple as that..

Maybe with new bios the things would change.

    Very nice explanation!!!

So the only reason that we haven't see more than a cpu reach x57 and more on UD4 is that noone else had try a good chip on this board.. right?

    UD4-B3 - http://valid.canardpc.com/show_oc.php?id=1718432
    M4E - http://valid.canardpc.com/show_oc.php?id=1695686

Same voltage (on gb after vdrop). But still, the board is heavy to work with. Once it boots, it works okay but you've to spent time and time to boot successful. I can do x56 on it too but can dream of doing 32M at 56xxMHz as I've done on M4E.

    x56 - http://valid.canardpc.com/show_oc.php?id=1718465

Very tricky and weird board after M4E.

    You cann't compare UD4 and MIVE.Same as compare DDR3 1600 and DDR3 2133.

Okay that's for sure but even on this board, the cpu should run on 50mhz lower freq the same bench, right?
I know comparing M4E with UD4 is silly but with Sandy Bridge there are no big (200mhz+) differences between two (or more) boards and I'm not saying the board is heavy to work with because I can't reach the same freq as on M4E but the problems of getting it work on every freq above 5,5ghz.
