The 2ghz chips have went down in price again. $19.99 each and the auction says there are 285 in stock.

Ok, little help for the dummy?

What do I have to do to fit a PCI sound card to my Intel mobo'd Sammy?
I have a Creative CT4810 (well two of them actually) but they won't physically fit in either slot. I've seen reference to the longer slot being PCI compatible but it's a no-go physically. What do I have to mod and how?

thats odd that the PCI card doesnt physically fit in the PCIX slot
    how old is the soundcard?
it definitelt wont fit in the PCIEx8 slot - & for good reason!
if the soundcard doesnt fit, I'm not aware of any mod to make it do so

How old? It originally sold with drivers for DOS and Win3.1, though they kept up the drivers till Win XP.
    Here's the card:

There's no notch in the card at the plate end to line up with a post in the PCI-x slot and no room to shove it down further without pulling the plate off, which I can't do as if I get this working it will be my girls' daily drive.

    Ah.. it's not universal PCI...

y'see, there are 2 versions of PCI-X - a 3.3V one and a 5V one. Most modern PCI cards are universally-keyed to fit into either type - the connector has 2 'cuts' that look fairly symmetrical. Yours only has one.

    Spot the difference here:

Modding it would most likely destroy it...

Yep, that slot on the left hand end in the picture is what I'm missing.

Ok, anyone reading this thread can now determine that a Creative Labs CT4810 will NOT fit into the Intel motherboard.

I'm a little hesitant only because my trust level in the postal service isn't overly high right now.

I ordered a USB sound adaptor from eBay. Cost me a dollar. Even if it doesn't work I can't go too far wrong.

Had a close call with the Sossamen this afternoon. Lightning strike so close I'm gonna poop sparks for a week! Lost my router and a network switch (phone line to the router and the switch was dicky anyway). Thankfully had spares but I've lost a LOT of functionality with this new router. Can't find an advanced configuration page anywhere in the stupid thing!

Your going to be out of luck on the sound card thing - it's probably a better idea to just get a new sound card

I am right in saying that I can remove the plastic bit that covers the bigger chipset heatsink? And the only reason it's there is for channeling airflow if one was using a rackmount 1/2u chassis?

you should leave it on. asking for problems.

the amount of airflow gain would be.. useless.

What i mean is - if i remove it then i can use a fan blowing directly onto it but with it on, that fan is just blowing onto the plastic
