im gona be pulling everything appart and cleaning it all here as soon as i get my 9800gtx blockand was wondering what i should soak the copper parts in?
thanks
I've always used 1/2 water and 1/2 vinegar ... if you have some light oxidation, an old toothbrush comes in handy.
There are some wiz-bang products out there, never used them.

Speeking as a jeweller sulphuric acid is the best method of removing copper oxide, but any acidic compound will work, just not as fast or througherly.
If some people managed to damage nickel plating on some of their blingy full cover gpu blocks with some stronger vinegar, i'd say one should be very careful with something even more acidic then that. So imho ketchup still is in the sweet spot of being just slightly acidic, but just enough to still ease cleaning.
ketchup + isopranol alcohol after that.
Isopranol is also great for removing TIM. Advised by Artic cooling.
Also it's also good to clean your screen with.
In my experience, vinegar/ketchup don't come close to Tarn-X. 10-30 second dip and then rinse/dry is enough for even the nastiest oxidation. Fingers say it isn't acidic either![]()

if your not in a rush..
Get 7 up.. and no im not kidding.
Pour it in a bowl, and then soak the block completely inside it.
seal the bowl with cellophane wrap, and let it sit for a good half day.
Then remove block, and wash off quickly, or it will oxidize again like no tomorrow.
Make sure the copper is completely submerged... once again, if any part of it is exposed, it will oxidize like no tomorrow real quickly.

from a chemical point of view salt and lemon acid is the best way to remove oxide from copper parts. vinegar is way too aggressive and will start eat up your block if used too long.
if you don't have lemon acid at hand (who does?) have a look what i have done:

take a look at the pictures! the results speak for themself ...
