Should I Buy a 5870 or wait untill 6000 series is released?

Hi everyone,
Ive nearly finished my computer upgrade, i just have to choose what graphics card to get.
Im currently using my old Zotac GTX260 (192 core edition) and its starting to show its age in some new games. I was thinking of getting an ati 5870 and using the 260 as a physx card.
There's been a few rumours on the net the the ati 6000 series will be released in a few months but they also say that it will just be the 5000 series revamped.

My question is should I get a 5870 now or hold out untill the 6000 series?

+1 with BB i would take a 460 over the 470 even at that price.

unless u can get a deal on a used card or u have a dead card i would wait until the new cards in november, its not like there are any new games out before that

My main reason for choosing ati is my motherboard (crosshair iv) only supports crossfire and it's nice to have the possibility of a future crossfire/crossfirex upgrade.
Still all this talk of micro-stuttering has got me worried about sli/crossfire so a single nVidia card could still be a solution.

The 460/470 do look very good value for money. The power/heat output doesn't really bother me much (im using a silverstone fortress 2 case that has 3 180 mm intake fans on the bottom which should help with cooling ).

Thanks again for all the replies, it will probably help me make the sensible decision

Depends on your exact situation -- are there games you're playing where you essentially can't play them because the GTX 260 performs so badly or can you muster through? I'm one who rarely jumps on the latest released hardware due to bugs with the software usually (see GSOD issue on the 5870s at launch or the 5970 cold bugs, etc.) so if you can hold out, I'd actually wait until the 6000 series is released and THEN buy a 5870 or check out a GTX460 SLI setup as card prices for 5000 series and some NVidia cards SHOULD drop when the 6000 series is released.

I never knew you could do this - This definitely something I will look into in the future. Currently it doesn't seem to support 460 sli

It can still play games ok , but some it cant handle on high settings and I have to reduce it to medium to get decent fps

Wait for the 6000. 6770 should be in the $200-250 with more or equal(being negative) power than HD5870. At least they launch things on time and you don't have to wait 6 months in a semi eternal wait-for loop.

I dunno, I'd say if you really think you need to upgrade, do it now. The info coming out about the upcoming ATI cards seems like it might not be a tremendous upgrade, but rather a refresh. I don't know if thats true or not, but you have to weigh the fact that you might be waiting for a "6870" but only get a "5890" I'm kind of in the same boat, 4870 is getting long in the tooth

Personally I would get a 1GB GTX460. Once OCd they can meet or fractionally outpace a stock GTX470, thats a lot of performance at a good price. In the meantime, it allows you to sit back and watch how GPUs progress over the next 1.5yrs or so.

Ordered a gtx460, should get here monday. Think Im going to order another, I dont think a single card will cut it.

I have had mostly ATI cards over the years, but the game I play most is BC2, crossfire sucks. I can get good frames but have to use that profile driver thingy, and that causes the game close and goes to desktop about every other game, sometimes cant even finnish 1 game. So thats why i am going to try these 460's.

OC_Nub have you tried Catalyst 10.8 with the 10.8a application profiles? I got a huge performance boost in BC2 and the random crash to desktops stopped happening.

GTX 460 or wait IMO.

5850 / 5870 are too expensive over what the GTX 460 offers (can buy two for a little more than a 5870, and reach 5970 performance), and even a single one isnt really that bad when overclocked for its price.

Even the GTX 470 is soon going to be replaced with the 384 shader G104, now is not a good time to buy the 5850 / 5870 / 5970 / GTX 470 / 480 cards.

5770 is good for lower budgets, but the GTX 460 is really worth the extra cost.
